Hey I love me a harmless and good natured troll. Shit’s a lost art. Them and dragonfucker. As a bonus it helps weed out people who don’t know how to not feed trolls. Non-malignant trolls are part of a healthy online ecosystem.
Dragonfucker was not harmless. If you think they were, then you didn’t hear their opinions about suicide. Needlessly cruel and disgusting.
The thorn is so harmless, and honestly, sxan has been one of my favorite people to converse with here for a long time. I’ve never gotten anything trollish from them at all.
I enjoyed drag as well, though I can understand why drag was much harder for people to cope with. I always found it a fun challenge to try and speak drag-speak, and I always had fun with them otherwise just treating them as though there were nothing out of the ordinary with them. Drag talked to me about things I found interesting, and frankly there are too few regular commenters in general for me to just weed them out for harmless things. Conversation has felt a bit dead the last few weeks, and I’d love to have another quirky weirdo here to talk to most days. Way better than all the political extremists and accelerationists we never seem to fall short of.
Yeah. I find that my conversations with sxan are generally pleasant. If you don’t make your interactions with them centered around the thorn, they seem nice.
I used to apologize for people needlessly antagonizing them, but they said it didn’t bother them, so now I just roll my eyes people can’t get over it after so long now or just block them. That people just go around purposely doing petty shit like downvoting them in every comment is just a really sad look for those users.

Yeah, I don’t know if it was a bit, a troll, if they were really like that, or whatever, but other than the unorthodox pronouns, there was nothing different about talking to them. Always positive interactions with them. I hated seeing everyone here dogpile on them, as I thought a big upside of this place was supposed to be letting people just be who/what they want to be. Never saw them be rude to anyone, just asked to be called Dragonfucker/rider depending on the time period and to use drag in the place of any pronoun. With some phrasings it sounded odd, so I took it as a creative writing exercise to format my responses in a way the language flowed better. I just thought it was shitty how people couldn’t just ignore them if they didn’t want to humor drag. I don’t know if they took it serious or not, but I’d rather know I’m not being shitty to someone that is either having innocent fun, or may have some severe emotional or mental issues. We’re all real people on the other side of the screen.
Some people have typing quirks I guess. Harmless form of self-expression.

Personally, I find the memorable weirdos are part of what makes Lemmy fun. I only tend to block the blatant spam or bot accounts. But each to their own!
I had to block that user for the sole reason of my brain stopping reading every time I saw that symbol, then I had to figure out what the hell it was before the brain unfuncked itself and could continue reading. I guess if I read that symbol every day, it’d get easier. But coming across that user every 3rd day or so, wasn’t really enough for my brain to start automatically figuring things out on the fly. And yes, my brain is stupid and it makes me stupid as well, I know this.
I’m already typing and reading in my 4th language, I don’t need to complicate my life anymore than that. So blockety-block-block is the answer.
I have that problem when people use “it’s” when it should be “its” and vice versa. Unfortunately blocking those would leave me with a Lemmy of maybe half a dozen users.

Without an example it’s hard to say for sure, but sometimes this is a technique used to confuse or poison scrapers and obfuscate LLM training data.
Substituting the otherwise-obsolete thorn (þ) for “th” sounds, for example.
Obviously it’s working the ais have no idea what that symbol means. Genius level stuff.
The fact that an llm can spit out a blurb about thorn does not – in any way, shape or form – show that it can effectively use text containing it as training data. Those are completely unrelated processes.

I’m sure the companies that have scraped the entirety of the internet for training data have been foiled by that one user replacing some letters in their comments (but not their posts) on lemmy.
