I was converted from a pirate to a subscriber about 10-12yrs ago… But the enshitification of everything makes me yearn for my old hat once more.

The Olympics used to be for amateurs only and athletes who were professional and earned their living from a sport weren’t allowed to compete. I remember reading about the UK’s Torvil & Dean figure skaters who after their win at the olympics in the 80’s went pro… and a couple of olympics later there was massive debate and changes to rules to allow them to compete again.
All the modern olympics of the last 30-40yrs are about is faux national pride and money… same for the bodies of all sports… they’re all corrupt and they’re all about stockpiling as much cash as they can for bribes and kickbacks… some of them like FIFA have hundreds of millions of cash reserves… But they don’t pay countries to host the world cup, the countries pay them, pay for the construction, pay for the infrastructure and FIFA reaps in the sponsorship and TV money.
Zionism is NOT Judaism… Zionists are NOT followers of Judaism… they are no different to literal Nazis and you cannot be antisemetic towards Zionists.
It’s also worth noting the semetic people are NOT just jewish, they are ALL people from the region across multiple religions, including Palestinians.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Arguing for the car as a good method of transportation is like arguing that having personal diesel generator to power you home is a good idea
3·26 days agoMake public transport, cheap and frequent through the country, along with a cheap reliable car share/hire scheme… and you’d see the need for cars dwindle.
It’s easy for certain types of people to claim the high ground, when they have no idea what it’s like for everyone else… they live in gilded cages in cities with cheap and easy to access public transport… so they have no need for a car… and thus no one has a need for car either… they’re so blinkered, they might as well be blind… and the ignorance that goes with the preachy mentality is even worse.
So when I can walk to the end of my road and catch a bus to the next town over… without it taking over 2hrs to travel 6 miles… via a 16 mile trip in the opposite direction and changing buses that means sitting around in the freezing cold for 40 mins… I’ll consider giving up the car… But the chances of that happening are ZERO because ‘capitalism’ dictates we must CONSUME, CONSUME, CONSUME… there is no will with govts or the rich to do a damn thing… and the rich account for around 49% of ALL individuals emissions.
So take the preachy bullshit and shove it somewhere dark and stinky.

2·2 months agoI pay £10 a month in the UK for 25GB data and unlimited texts and calls within the UK (not including premium rate numbers). I rarely ever use more than 1-2GB of data because I’m always on wifi at home, and never use public wifi when out and about… and because I work from home. When I got out, it’s often for exercise, a meal or to visit friends/family (using their wifi)…
I haven’t paid more than £10 a month for about 15yrs now… used to be a meagre 500MB data to begin with… it just kept increasing.

1·2 months agoI did, but that’s not something that can easily be used in the wild… As for plans and layouts… those plans are located with local planning depts anyway. Proof of concept and a practical use for them are often very different… But yes… criminal charges need apply, not civil ones… and as I’m in the UK, perhaps they could bring terrorism charges against them too… they like doing that to people not actually committing acts of terror these days.

12·2 months agoMorons buying moronic ‘smart’ devices, unable to understand that they’re the product, not the consumer and they have sold away the rights to their eyes and ears with their purchases.
My house contains no smart devices that can harvest data from me (my mum does use a samsung smart TV from 2016) and all devices have everything disabled and other things installed to block data collection and tracking… I can’t stop 100% of it, but what little trickle they do get is basically worthless.
My eyes and ears are not for sale, nor is my privacy.

Or better still, take the drives from the servers their consciousness is stored on and put it into a grinder.
The last time there was a general strike in the USA that generated real change… it took just 11 million people… about 10% of the working age at the time. These days, you could do it with a few choice professions… air traffic control, truckers, dock workers… the people that move the people and the goods would cripple the country in a week, maybe 2.
Ease of access to internet porn, ruined my enjoyment of porn.
Let’s give this classic poem a tweak shall we…
First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trans community (The UK is currently here) And I did not speak out Because I was not trans
Then they came for all people of colour (The USA is now here) And I did not speak out Because I was not a person of colour
Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me
Not caring because it doesn’t directly affect you is how you end up on this road to fascism to begin with. It’s why there have been thousands of arrests of innocent people in the UK for simply protesting about a ban on a group of people who threw paint on some RAF planes and vandalised some genocide supporting israeli weapons manufacturer… because some people do care about others, because they have compassion and a conscience.
If the UK goes ahead with plans to ban protests entirely as they saying… those numbers will increase because it won’t stop the people and the numbers continue to grow and if you try to stamp it out, there will only be one way it ends… with state authorised violence and death against people protesting the killing of innocent civilians.
That’s the road you are on with that attitude, and then you’ll be screaming that last line and playing the victim.
No, it’s because imgur has refused to conduct the simple ‘are you over the age of XX’ when people create accounts, which is required by law… there’s no verification of anything involved. Just a tick the box exercise… they couldn’t even be bothered to do that and that’s why they’re being investigated and are facing massive fines for years of refusal to do what every other site has done for probably 2 decades now… It’s got nothing to do with the draconian online safety act that was recently brought in… it’s imgur throwing their toys out of the pram and screaming ‘LALALALALALALA’ we can’t hear you now. it will have zero effect on the investigation and fines for their previous failings to follow the law… it’s literally cutting of their nose to spite their face.

I absolutely DO NOT have a mediaserver in my own home with a BDrom that can rip movies from physical media for my own personal use… I do not scour charity shops and car boot sales for music, movies and tv shows to put on there and I do not have around 70TB of storage and I am certainly not looking to expand the HDD’s in the new year.
