Hot take: this article is capitalist propaganda. “owning a giant company is better than being a wareslave” No shit, sherlock.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•People with bad/no hearing, can you "hear" yourself chewing when you eat?
28·16 days agoI’m not deaf, but just in case you don’t get an answer that stems from personal experience:
Your hearing loss in the one ear is (I’m assuming) caused by the ear canal being blocked. Your sensory organ still hears you chewing because the sound is transferred through the bones of your skull to your ear.
A deaf person has a different problem: their sensory organ is damaged or missing, so it doesn’t matter where the sound comes from, they don’t hear it.
By all psychologists?
I agree that there is some stupid stuff being done in the name of science, 100%. But the discipline isn’t really the deciding factor imho.
If you are interested, here is sabine explaining how academic is fundamentally broken.
The cannabis plant when left to itself doesn’t create much THC (which is what gets you high), but it is very useful for making rope and clothing, as well as oil and other products. Only when you make sure that you only have female plants (and take care of them in a certain way) do they produce lots of THC.
So just because the plant is growing somewhere doesn’t mean that someone is smoking it.
Absolutely, yes.
The scientific method is an empirical method for acquiring knowledge through careful observation, rigorous skepticism, hypothesis testing, and experimental validation.
Any observable phenomenon should be studied using the scientific method. The alternatives are superstition or ignorance.
Psychology is a good example. It has been limited by our technology and our morals. The human brain is extremely complicated, and we cannot just disrupt peoples lives to create ideal testing conditions. But that doesn’t mean that psychology is not science. It just means that it has unique challenges.

Linux@programming.dev•I saved a doomed Windows laptop by embracing Linux
1·1 month agoThanks for sharing. I’m too paranoid, as I have very little free time to fix stuff if it breaks. Still good to know.

Linux@programming.dev•I saved a doomed Windows laptop by embracing Linux
4·1 month agoYes, that’s exactly how RPM works. it’s supposed to be a last resort if options like distrobox or homebrew can’t deliver what you need. It can break stuff if you are not careful.
Anyway, then I’d definitely go with silverblue.

6·1 month agoSilverblue is what I’m putting on my partner’s older PC, the fact that it atomic is a big plus-point.
Be warned though, some less common non-cli packages are more difficult to install. If your SO needs something along those lines, mint may be better.
For example, nordVPN has a nice GUI interface, but it has no appimage or flatpak, so it won’t work on silverblue without modifying the ostree. That’s not a good idea, so on my (bazzite) PC I have installed a simple openVPN GUI package, and set it up to use our nordVPN account. It works fine, but it’s not a pretty map-based interface, just a giant list of servers.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it homophobic to hate girls’ love content because you find girls kissing to be gross?
10·1 month agoPersonal Taste ≠ Bigotry
It is ridiculous to think that anyone has to like or prefer something. That’s like saying there is something wrong for not liking the taste of licorice. If she thinks two girls kissing is gross, that’s fine, she is allowed to feel how she feels. If she thinks that two girls kissing is wrong on some moral or ethical level she is being a bigot.
There is a huge difference there, and it is extremely important in today’s world to understand this difference.
You should try this out. I haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve been meaning to.

Linux@programming.dev•Tech Talk: How Electron went Wayland-native, and what it means for your apps | Electron
7·1 month agoI use obsidian extensively, and I love it. It certainly does seem to use WAY more system resources than it should though, and I assume that electron is to blame. It’s a shame they didn’t base it on a different framework.
Perhaps someone who knows more about web development can explain what sort of upsides electron brings with it.

No, it’s fedora.
