The issue is that freedom is a paradox; if everyone can do whatever they want, what if doing what you want to do prevents someone else from doing what they want to do? We needed some way to figure out who was allowed to do more, and we decided might makes right. If you want the most freedom for yourself, you need to limit the freedom of others as much as possible, and that’s just what those in power did, and continue to do.

‘The most uneducated buffoon in history stands at a podium, bloated with self-importance, lips pursed like a carnival barker ready to sell turd milk to the unsuspecting. He grins a grotesque smirk stretched across his face—as he scrawls his name onto a hollow decree, a sham celebration of the dismantling of knowledge itself. The Department of Education falls, not with a bang, but with wheezing verbs, suffocating under the weight of his own staggering ignorance. Surrounding him are the usual suspects: cowards in expensive suits, servile sycophants clapping like trained seals, and opportunistic ghouls picking clean the bones of democracy. Liars, fools, and thieves all parasites fattening themselves on the hardships of the many. They stand in rigid formation, dead-eyed and soulless, their allegiance sworn not to country, not to principle, but to power, and the dark, festering rot that clings to it. And there he is the convicted wrong, the living embodiment of septic tank spew, his voice a noxious fog of grift and grievance. He lectures the world on right and wrong, irony clawing at the walls, desperate to escape the grotesque theatre of his moral void. The stomach turns, the air curdles, and for a moment, history itself recoils watching, in horror, as the great American experiment teeters on the precipice, led by a man who could not spell “precipice” if his life depended on it.’

      socialist tyranny of health care

Lot of Gen Z is under 26, which means they can be under their parents healthcare. Have a coworker that’s in that and until my job he didn’t realize healthcare costs for insurance that comes out of paychecks. Like I told him, save up while he can be under his parents insurance.

But anyone older than, at this moment, being born after 10/18/2000 is now falling into the insurance pile.

Sucks… but this is the choice the country made.

I’m finding it difficult to understand why you think younger people are somehow less stupid and impressionable?

That’s almost a by-definition sort of expectation here.

Young people are stupid and impressionable, just like how older people are less physically capable.

Impressionability is literally a defining aspect of being young and still having a developing brain. This is also why it’s such a huge fight to corrupt our education system.

I’d guess it has to do with the benefit of doubt based on a lack of evidence, and a dash of confirmation bias thrown in. For example, there’s plenty of evidence that the generations before them suck at choosing leaders and then suck at governing when they finally get a seat at the table. I would choose to defend millennials because as an older millennial I am biased toward that generation. But Gen Z doesn’t yet have a lot of evidence out there in either direction.

All that said, I feel like the statement “Boomers destroyed the planet in essentially every way and made life worse for every generation that preceded and followed it” is just fact. But again, I’m biased.

“I used to wonder how it was possible that Trump could have won in 2016 and then again in 2024, given how emotionally toxic, morally vacant, and psychologically mangled he is. I do not wonder anymore. He won for that exact reason. He was not a candidate. He was a mirror. If you were a racist, you found your guy. If you were a misogynist, you found your guy. If money was your only religion, you found your guy. If your heart was armoured shut, you found your guy. If you mocked disabled people, you found your guy. If you hated intelligent people, you found your guy. If you were a rapist, you found your guy. If you enjoyed golden showers with Russian sex workers, you found your guy. If you had done absolutely nothing to confront your emotional wreckage, you found your guy. If you were a serial cheater, you found your guy. If you were a perpetual bankrupt, you found your guy. If you stiffed honest workers, you found your guy. If you were a conman, you found your guy. If you mocked people’s appearances, you found your guy. If you longed for a toxic Daddy, you found your guy. If you were dissociated and disembodied, you found your guy. If you were unconscionable in every economic dealing, you found your guy. If you lied as naturally as breathing, you found your guy. If you had never eaten a green vegetable, you found your guy. If you were a white supremacist, you found your guy. If your ego contained a hole so large not even the presidency could fill it, you found your guy. If you were a sociopath who cared not one molecule about other humans, you found your guy. If he had only two of these traits, he never would have won. He won because he had hundreds of them, and millions of people recognized themselves in at least one. This has never been about Trump. It has always been about the people who finally had their worst instincts validated. Trump did not create the cruelty, he licensed it. He handed out permission slips for hate. He is merely a symptom of a far deeper disease: collective toxicity. If there is one sentence that explains Trump’s power, it is this: “He says the things I’m thinking.” That is the part that should chill the spine. Who knew that tens of millions of Americans were thinking such unconscionable things about their fellow citizens? Who knew how many white men felt so threatened by women and challenged by minorities that they were ready to torch democracy to feel big again? Who knew that after decades of apparent progress on race and gender, so many people were living in seething resentment, waiting for a demagogue to legitimize their worst selves and convert their bitterness into political power? We were living in a fool’s paradise. We aren’t anymore." — Michael Jochum

i work at a community college which includes the county’s “early college” which is pretty much 9th-12th grade high school age kids who qualified to take AA/AS courses for higher ed credit at the same time as their high school curriculum. what i see is pretty much it’s not the kids that are the problem. for the most part, dumb kids are the result of dumb parents, which there are a lot of in my redneck mountain town. and, surprise, dumb parents have a lot more kids than smart parents.

yea, gen z may be dumb, but it’s not gen z that made them that way

edit: i want to add, there’s nothing inherently wrong with a lack of intelligence. some of the best people i’ve ever known are not intellectuals. it’s character that makes people worthwhile. empathy. how you treat people who can’t do anything for you. if you’re accepting of people regardless of whether they hold the same beliefs, values, religion, have the same skin color, and everything else, then i would choose to be around you instead of the dickhead who’s the smartest person in the room. fuck that guy

it’s telling that these fucking dickheads are trying, desperately, to paint empathy as some kind of flaw or weakness. empathy is how the human species survived past the stone age

Which is both a fundamental part of the grift and says a lot about people.

There are a lot of wealthy elite Republican Trump supporters who think installing an authoritarian regime will consolidate and extend their power. They don’t see that authoritarianism means the only thing protecting them from a purge is the thought of it by the leader. Their wealth, power and privilege, CEO or Senator, mean precicely shit. “Trump Is the festering carcass of American rot shoved into an ill-fitting suit: the sleaze of a conman, the cowardice of a draft dodger, the gluttony of a parasite, the racism of a Klansman, the sexism of a back-alley creep, the ignorance of a bar-stool drunk, and the greed of a hedge-fund ghoul all spray-painted orange and paraded like a prize hog at a county fair. Not a president. Not even a man. Just the diseased distillation of everything this country swears it is not but has always been arrogance dressed up as exceptionalism, stupidity passed off as common sense, cruelty sold as toughness, greed exalted as ambition, and corruption worshiped like gospel. It is America’s shadow made flesh, a rotting pumpkin idol proving that when a nation kneels before money, power, and spite, it does not just lose its soul it shits out this bloated obscenity and calls it a leader. The Trump regime this carnival of third-rate strongmen, grifters, sycophants, and sadists is not innovating anything. It is copying. It is importing the authoritarian model wholesale. They have read the Putin playbook, dog-eared the best parts, and now they are running it in real time. And the cruelty? That is not a flaw in the system. That is the system. Trump, a failed businessperson and serial conman, did not stumble into power because he had a vision. He stumbled into it like a raccoon into a jewellery store: overwhelmed, opportunistic, and desperate to grab everything shiny before the lights come on, He brought with him a gang of similarly hollow, self-serving goons parasites in flag pins who recognized that brute force and spectacle could serve as a perfect cover for mass-scale corruption. All they needed was enough boots, enough masks, and enough Americans too scared or too exhausted to resist. Americans must avoid being overwhelmed by the torrent of frightening moves the Trump administration has made. Instead resist the paralysis that might result from that torrent, for the sake of both you and our patriotic predecessors who fought for freedom and defeated fascism in Europe in World War II.”

        I like draft dodgers, though.

This is just a bunch of lib slop. Like would it be better if a president was one with a vision, and a successful business person? Or if we had a president who was tough with our enemies, but not to an excessive degree?

None of these virtues this long lib-rant espouses I agree with, they would be the virtues of someone totally opposed to me. I would much rather my enemies be incompetent and baffoonish, but this person Oliver Kornetzke clearly doesn’t see Amerikkka as his enemy, he seems to love the USA actually. He’s just lamenting that the glory days of the empire are gone now.

'Trump embodies and enacts this particular mindset, but he did not invent it. The US response to the coronavirus crisis has been paralysed by a contradiction that the Republicans have inserted into the heart of US democracy. On the one hand, they want to control all the levers of governmental power. On the other they have created a popular base by playing on the notion that government is innately evil and must not be trusted. The contradiction was made manifest in two of Trump’s statements on the pandemic: on the one hand that he has “total authority”, and on the other that “I don’t take responsibility at all”. Caught between authoritarian and anarchic impulses, he is incapable of coherence.

But this is not just Donald Trump. The crisis has shown definitively that Trump’s presidency is not an aberration. It has grown on soil long prepared to receive it. The monstrous blossoming of misrule has structure and purpose and strategy behind it. In the USA there are very powerful interests who demand “freedom” in order to do as they like with the environment, society and the economy. They have infused a very large part of American culture with the belief that “freedom” is literally more important than life. My freedom to own assault weapons trumps your right not to get shot at school. Now, my freedom to go to the barber (“I Need a Haircut” read one banner this week in St Paul, Minnesota) trumps your need to avoid infection. Usually when this kind of outlandish idiocy is displaying itself, there is the comforting thought that, if things were really serious, it would all stop. People would sober up. Instead, a large part of the US has hit the bottle even harder. And the president, his party and their media allies keep supplying the drinks. There has been no moment of truth, no shock of realisation that the antics have to end. No one of any substance on the US right has stepped in to say: get a grip, people are dying here. That is the mark of how deep the trouble is for the US – it is not just that Trump has treated the crisis merely as a way to feed tribal hatreds but that this behaviour has become normalised. When the freak show is live on TV every evening, and the star is boasting about his ratings, it is not really a freak show any more. For a very large and solid bloc of Americans, it is reality. And this will get worse before it gets better. Trump has many more months in power. In his inaugural address he evoked “American carnage” and promised to make it stop. But now that the real carnage has arrived, he is revelling in it. He is in his element. As things get worse, he will pump more hatred and falsehood, more death-wish defiance of reason and decency, into the groundwater. If a new administration succeeds him in future it will have to clean up the toxic dump he leaves behind. If he returns in some way, toxicity will have become the lifeblood of American politics. They did it because it gave them a good feeling that they could express their toxic behavior with impunity. Also, they hate brown people, immigrants, women, anyone who isn’t white.

2024, given how emotionally toxic, morally vacant, and psychologically mangled he is.

They believed his lies. Kamala Harris promised nothing would change while Donald Trump promised change for the better. In those circumstances, it’s easy to see how the gullible would pick the liar while the disillusioned stayed home. The Democrats threw away an easy slam dunk victory because they wanted to win with a marginal victory instead. They couldn’t walk that tightrope and lost to an idiot.

Gen Z should regret their vote just based warfare. Let me explain exactly how this affects them specifically.

Trump promised no more wars then proceeds to abduct the president of Venezuela, attack Iran without giving a reason and then constantly talk about taking over countries. You think the acts of war stop with Iran?

The newly renamed Department of War has a finite amount of service people available for wars. Gen Z you are first in line to be drafted when more people are needed.

Your personal legacy will be struggling financially in a s@&t economy until you are required to put your life on the line for a government who sees you as a disposable resource for a war that could have been entirely avoided. That’s just my personal fear though. Maybe they aren’t worried about that.

If you were duped in by the anti-war message after his first term even, I mean, come on. You are pretty slow.

And really, that can’t be helped. They can vote and drive and buy guns and make families and everything. We know for a fact that there’s a third or so of our population that are absolutely intellectually impaired.

Then, another large portion are ignorant, they act impulsively and have wishful thinking, even if they’re pretty smart. They just think that they “know” things, while not having the faintest idea… these are usually of the religious variety.

Another quite significant portion have mental illness that influences their reality, like narcissistic and sociopathic and depressive features.

Then, another large portion are alcoholics and drug addicts. This is often paired with another feature

They’re all just walking around and driving cars and on the bus and the train and planes, they are everywhere and any one of them can do anything at any time. Who knows why they voted for who? They don’t even know. it’s amazing that we can make it through the day, really

Libs again being completely out of touch with reality (and ableist).

People don’t become uneducated because they’re mentally defective, they become uneducated because schools get underfunded. People don’t just become drug addicts, they get addicted to drugs because of mental illness and the stress that comes from being poor. Religiosity also tends to decrease when people are exposed to more non-religious people and when the need for community is fulfilled by other things. Most people aren’t born with mental illness, they develop it because of their conditions.

Liberals do nothing to actually help these things then when people inevitably get stop coming to vote for candidates who will both screw them over and some people shift to the other side (which actually promises things, false fascist promises, but promises of change nonetheless) they blame the voters for being “intellectually impaired,” which conveniently isn’t a problem anyone can solve, just an unchanging fact to divert blame to and sigh over.

And when you point this out all they do is compare themselves to Republicans and say that they’re better than the alternative. I mean like c’mon, how ridiculous is this gonna get? It’s like a whole playbook on how to never do anything.

I suppose there’s no point in getting frustrated over it. I shouldn’t expect anything less; doing nothing is what liberals stand for. It is a playbook for doing nothing. They devote themselves first and foremost to the interests of capital while saying otherwise to deceive you, then when the inevitable crisis hits, they suppress the left and wear its face.

Asking them to be better really is a pointless task because the real liberals, not the people who vote for them, are lying when the say they care about your wellbeing. At best they only care about idea of individual liberty: the freedom for a homeless person to technically, hypothetically, under the law, be able to work anywhere and own private property. (Remember this is the core belief they actually stand for.) That was only progressive (and questionably so at that) back in feudalism when most people were serfs and when working for another lord or moving up classes was literally illegal. To be able to move beyond that, we have to look at our society / mode of production through a materialist lens or else solutions to systemic flaws will completely elude us and we will only be able to condescendingly complain, throwing useless moral aphorisms and platitudes against our problems.

They’re not imaginary, they’re everywhere. Everywhere you look you’ll find people who think politics isn’t about changing things, but about adhering to idealistic moral prescriptions, or people who invert reality and think that ideas are the cause of material conditions, not the other way around: you see it whenever someone uses the concept of punitive justice based on free will and that individuals choosing evil are the root of societal problems while ignoring the material context that creates those people. There are like endless examples of these liberals; liberalism is the dominant ideology that is so prevalent it can pretend to be apoliticalism.

Trump promised he was going to do a whole bunch of incredibly controversial stuff, most of which isn’t done due to extensive proof that it’s a bad idea.

… then they’re somehow surprised it went poorly?

It’s the anti-intellectual plague that continues to drag us down, e.g. “The experts are pretentious; I trust my Facebook friends more.”

Regret afterwards has replaced thinking through the consequences beforehand.

But how can they get more likes on social media by acting shocked and victimized if they make the intelligent decision and nothing bad happens as a result?

Drama = views. Seems like the only concept they’ve actually got a handle on.

It is a peculiar era in which we live - bad guys running the prisons putting good guys in the prisons… or worse.
