Palmer Luckey of Anduril is teaming with Ben Lamm of Colossal Biosciences to launch Warhound, a startup dedicated to genetically engineering and cloning dogs for service in war, police work and first responder work.

Speaking to Wired, Lamm explained that the project was twofold. One part of the project would oversee the genetic engineering and cloning of the ideal dogs for war, and the other would develop tech for them to use on battlefields.

Palmer Luckey is such a loser. He makes absolute bank by selling Oculus to Facebook and then decides with all that money his time is best spent developing weapons to help kill people more efficiently. We need more people like MySpace Tom who, after making a load of money, stepped away and pursued his artistic interests and turns out the guy is a really good photographer.

After selling to facebook he got flack. And then became an open supporter of Trump. He became hated.

My guess is that he’s a narcissist similar to Elon Musk, so him hearing himself called a looser and asshole (like he is) triggers him to be worse. To go “I’ll show him”. To do a nazi salute or you know, engineer dogs for war to oppress people more efficiently. Any supporter of Trump is obviously a psycho with no moral center, but if they also have narcissism and money and power, well it can get much worse.

The likelyhood of him reading comments like this is incredibly low whereas other random people may come across it and not have any idea about how terrible he has shown himself to be. So I think talking about him like this is a net positive.

Edit: I don’t think him getting flack caused him to change to be the person he is today, if anything getting massive amounts of money freed him to be more open about who he truly is inside. Maybe catching flack online also helped him in taking off the mask so to say.

Yeah I agree with both points. Also I read that he was a long term Trump supporter long before he ran for president.

And treating these malignant narcissists with kid gloves is useless I agree. But they are obsessed with their image, with their false ego or mirror image. So he will read how he has seen. This is of course speculation and I’m not a psychologist, but that is what I think happened to Musk. He played this image of a good tech “captain of industry”, then when he got rejected because of his greed and lies he switched to a different persona. And there is no real persona. You can even see similar things with Trump, very far back he was a democrat / liberal, but these malignant narcissists don’t have a real personal.

Not sure how useful any of this is really. In the end we live in the age of monsters. And they are all across the political mainstream spectrum now.

They really are. The hoarding of wealth isn’t seen as the disease that it is.

The ancient Greeks knew greed was one of humanity’s worst traits. Even Lycurgus knew money was a poison of the heart and banned the homoioi (spartan soldiers/equals) from owning money, they could keep goods (like food, bronze, iron, cattle etc).

So this is awful and stupid, but what I really want to know is what they think they can genetically engineer that can out perform a Belgian malinois for energy and physicality or a bloodhound for scent work. Like working dogs are already incredibly finely tuned through massive breeding programs.

Anyone else would have been shot for infiltrating the government with plans to end the world but we live in HELL AND NO ONE GIVES A FUCK OR WILL DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

Boston Dynamics made a robodog that doesn’t immediately trip over it’s own feet on gravel and has a thirty minute active runtime before it needs a two hour recharge.

Then they’ve dropped a fuckton on marketing and lobbying to keep the investment cash pouring in.

Making aggressive war dogs is something humanity tried before. Mastiffs and Chow Chows are two examples. They often attacked and killed their human masters.

Really I think we should extinct the practice of training attack dogs. In US police action they’re abused to escalate to violence quicker than an officer would resort to firearms.

Armored dogs in war would be responed to like mechanized armor. A dozen of my cheap flying explosive drones will make short work of your expensive dog.

But then, the US hasn’t caught up to the tech of cheap drones.

In my opinion, police dogs, in the US at least, are a vestigial cultural holdover from law enforcement’s slave catching past. There isn’t really a good tactical reason to be using them that couldn’t be performed by other equipment. They are unreliable, expensive, and get shot surprisingly often. If you really interrogated why they still use attack dogs, their answer would be that those people are scared of them.

Other than that, scenthounds are just probable cause generators which are all probably trained to alert on command.

I’d been tracking detection dogs more than attack dogs, and yeah police dogs in use have false-positive rates sometimes 90%+. US precincts call them probable cause on four legs.

The sad thing is there’s a detection dog sector that resents the current misuse culture since its delegitimizing good faith uses.

Maybe once we can overhaul how policing and investigation are done, we can restrict detection dogs to instances where high false positive rates will be counter productive. Say, sniffing for explosives at an airport at a long line of luggage.

Police dogs are analogous to whips, in that they are an ineffective weapon against an equal enemy but good at reducing the morale of slaves.
