The Picture of the Year for 2024 is “Cattle camp of the Mundari tribe, Terekeka, South Sudan”, by Diego Delso. It depicts a Mundari man polishing the horns of one of his Watusi cows as a ritualistic and protective practice. The picture was taken just after sunset, and the smoke in the background is the result of cow dung bonfires.

The near one’s horns doing the “air-dance” (tall plastic man seen outside car dealerships), it looks like. You don’t see that in too many horned species…
