My Fairphone is on its way and should arrive today. Replacing my semi-broken Samsung Galaxy Flip 4. Let’s see how it goes!

I’ve bought one for my kid so far, the only problem I see is weak 4 (works, but does not show caller id) or no 5G support in Slovenia. Something that shouldn’t be hard to fix, but 🤷

Fairphone 6 or an earlier model? That’s surprising if the 6 doesn’t work with Slovenia’s 5g network, as it supports all the necessary bands.

          1. I think it has to do with configuring for providers (even Pixels didn’t work initially, only after a while with an update). Edit: Note that the situation could have changed since I’ve last checked - I’ll ask him what’s the status now.

You could keep the Pixel - you’ve already bought it, so that money has already found its way into Google’s coffers. If it works for you, you could flash a degoogled custom ROM, such as GrapheneOS, /e/OS or iodéOS. Pixels are excellent for this.

    • Using Qwant instead of Google Search. It’s way more down-to-earth
    • Completely stopped using PayPal
    • Migrated from Gmail to Proton Mail
    • On my way to setting up a home server with storage and Nextcloud
    • Not really fully European, but switched from Reddit to Lemmy completely
    • Convinced my GF to also have a look at every-day-products and choose European alternatives, if possible. And she’s into it 😎

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

If you have a google account because it contains email history but it sits dormant, logged out, not using google products for years, then it isn’t supporting them with data.

They won’t delete your data anyway or your fingerprint link or tracking data if you delete your account, might as well also have access to it if needed.

Moving from Gilette to a safety razor has been so good. Feel like a big boy now when I shave. (Mootes (Swiss) for the razor and Tiger (Chech)for blades. 100 blades are about 20 bugs & 1 blade is 1 weeks worth of shaving. So it’s almost 2 years of shaving for 20 bugs. With Gillette Fussion I paid about 35 bugs for 8 blades. 1 blade would last me about 1 month. So 35 bugs for 8 months… way more expensive and American).

Than I recently started buying European clothing brands (that manufacture in Europe). I specially love Nikin. They are a Swiss Brand and produce in Portugal abd they plant 1 tree for each piece you get from them. They are pricy. But I was moving away from cheaper clothes anyway and getting more and more pieces that last long & I have to think 2 before buying.

Switched from audible to libro.fm and Thalia.de . Yes libro is still US but you can select a local book shop that gets a share of your subscription. The crazy part is, in both cases you actually download mp3 or even m4b files that you can save on YOUR system.

If you are willing to selfhost, you should look into audiobookshelf. Abs is a streaming server for audiobooks. It for example allows multiple people to use the same library and have their individual listening progress saved. And you can actually stream your books and don’t have to download them if you don’t want to.

In short: it’s a much nicer listening experience than audible ever was, especially if you shared your account with someone else.

      https://www.audiobookshelf.org/

And you can use https://audible-tools.kamsker.at/ to free your existing audible library from the clutches of Amazon

I started to realise how much furniture is still manufactured in Europe, when you start to look for quality and not simply for the cheapest product available. My personal favourite has to be Müller Small Living. After our move we ditched our old and broken bed for a new one and got one of their folding work stations for working from home. Both are amazing, both in terms of design and quality of the furniture. They are all made in Germany as well.

I found that Victorinox (makers of the swiss army knife) do an equivalent to the leatherman multi tool. The “swiss tool X”.
