Ice agents? Unless identified as law enforcement they’re just some assholes beating up an innocent man.

I’d start beating the shit out of them then claim in court there was no way for me to know who they were.

People keep saying, “Why aren’t the courts doing anything about ICE?”

        They are.

Federal courts have ruled thousands of times that ICE unlawfully detained people. Reuters reported that judges have found ICE illegally jailed individuals more than 4,400 times. There are also multiple active lawsuits alleging excessive force, denial of medical care, abusive detention conditions, and unconstitutional arrests.

The problem isn’t that the courts aren’t ruling against ICE. The problem is that many of these rulings apply to individual cases or specific jurisdictions rather than creating nationwide policy. Critics argue that ICE has continued many of the same practices despite repeated adverse court decisions.

Those are two very different issues. One is whether the judiciary is checking ICE’s conduct. The other is whether ICE is consistently changing its behavior in response to those rulings.

            Specifically acquitted, no.

I couldn’t find a case where someone was acquitted specifically because they fought an unidentified or plainclothes ICE agent. If that had happened, it’d probably be a pretty high-profile precedent.

What I did find were multiple cases where charges were dropped, people were released, or courts ruled against ICE after video evidence contradicted the agents’ version of events or judges found the arrests or detention were unlawful.

So it’s not true that the courts are just rubber-stamping everything ICE does. They’re ruling against ICE all the time. The bigger issue is that many of those rulings are case-specific and don’t automatically change ICE’s practices nationwide.

Those are two very different questions.

I’m also interested in this second question.

Are courts actually doing anything to stop ICE, or just awarding damages with taxpayer money? Dropped charges won’t help if you’re in a Salvadoran death camp.

A lot of our constitutional protections still apply and are still being enforced. For example, when an immigrant is arrested, the government is now required to provide a probable cause hearing, something that was not consistently happening at the beginning. As far as I can tell, people are being released when a court determines that their arrest was unlawful or unsupported by probable cause.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a complete shit show. My point is that it isn’t simply lawlessness. There are still legal safeguards in place, and people are challenging abuses in court. That doesn’t change my view that what we’re doing is wrong.

Also nothing is awarded from tax payer money.

I think the idea comes from central and south American police who hide the identities of their police to prevent retaliation from organized crime, who are often very well funded and have no qualms about torturing and murdering random people to ensure the law remains powerless to stop their reign of fear and terror.

However, in this case it is to prevent the police themselves from answering to the courts, and to hide themselves from public scrutiny. Even if you are not breaking the law, America’s legal system is brutal and destructive, and they know that and don’t want to face it themselves.

The idea of hiding ones self with a hood or wearing a disguise it is quite ancient… It is not clear why you are trying to connect this concept with central and south america, I get your point, but it doesn’t require such a complex comparison. The purpose here is quite simple.

It’s full of deep-rooted nationalism, political cults that dictate policy, and extreme right-wing politicians pulling the same crap we have here in America.

You have extreme homelessness in your capital, predatory lending practices, and billionaires in the top 1% who don’t pay their fair share of taxes.

Your universal healthcare is pretty good, though. I can’t say anything bad about that.

              No. It is entirely relevant.

Your country has participated in military interventions, surveillance, controversial policing, treatment of Indigenous peoples, immigration detention, and plenty of other policies that deserve criticism. Yet somehow America is uniquely evil while your country gets a pass. That’s selective outrage.

So yes, I’m going to defend my country when someone from another country spends their time lecturing Americans as if theirs is fundamentally different. It isn’t. The differences are often a matter of degree, not kind.

You can criticize America all you want. I have no issue with that. What I take issue with is the double standard. If you’re going to condemn the United States for something, then apply that exact same standard to your own country. If you don’t, then this isn’t about principles, it’s about your bias against America.

Don’t expect Americans to quietly nod along while foreigners endlessly dump on their country. We’re allowed to push back, we’re allowed to defend it, and we’re allowed to point out when the criticism comes from someone whose own country engages in many of the same practices they’re denouncing. If you don’t like being called out for that, the solution isn’t to tell Americans to stop defending their country, it’s to apply your standards consistently.

          This is a false dichotomy.

You can support enforcing immigration law while still opposing how ICE conducts some of its operations. In fact, that’s the position many people take.

The strongest opposition to ICE comes from the political left, particularly progressive Democrats and immigration advocacy groups. Their criticism is generally directed at tactics like large-scale raids, detention practices, due process concerns, and the scope of the agency’s authority. Some want major reforms; a smaller number want the agency abolished altogether.

Meanwhile, Republicans and many conservatives overwhelmingly support ICE, arguing that it’s carrying out laws passed by Congress and is an essential part of immigration enforcement.

So pretending there’s some universal consensus either for or against ICE is just inaccurate. The agency is one of the most politically polarized institutions in the country. Whether someone supports it, wants it reformed, or wants it abolished depends largely on their political views, not on some objective, settled fact.

I won’t quote your comment because you deleted it, and it wasn’t that bad.

But I’ll respond to it anyway.

The news you get from whatever state media you’re watching, or whatever you happen to see here on Lemmy or Reddit, is not representative of the country as a whole.

There is significant opposition to what is happening in my country right now. We do not like ICE as a whole. We do not consider it legitimate law enforcement. To many of us, it has become a modern-day Gestapo.

They are widely disliked across many communities in America. Many people view those employed by ICE as the bottom-of-the-barrel refuse of our society.

If you’d like to understand what is actually happening in our country, I suggest doing something more than toilet-bowl research.

It also has a significant psychological effect on the “agents” in that they feel they can’t be held responsible and it also internally dehumanizes them because they are no longer [person] but [anonymous agent].

We saw what this leads to in the banana republic regimes that the US/CIA installed all over the world in the 60s, it always ended the same way, brutal repression and extrajudicial killings.

You are the one assuming. I live in a different country haha. I’m not “scared” for anyone either I just see unhinged posts that will have you put in jail with no benefit to anyone so I say so.

Posts like that one will get you arrested in the country we are talking about. My breath smells like roses compared to yours.

          I lick no boot.

Enabling ICE thugs pretty much looks like boot licking though.

To be clear: there’s no indication this wasn’t an ambush by thugs and yet you defend the ambush and criticise defending the attacked person.
Interesting that the shown aggression doesn’t get the perpetrators arrested, isn’t it?
But afair they can kill people in cold blood and don’t even get prosecuted in most cases.

This is what you’re defending. Disgusting!

They could show an ID and a warrant and it would end differently.
But it was convenient to ignore that part, wasn’t it?

        People like you enable ICE.
        Your behaviour is disgusting.
