And then Americans have the nerve to get pissy with Canada when their smoke gets over here. No offers to help, no well wishes. Just complaints. Typical.

Damn those all seem huge. Are fires and the resulting smoke a lot bigger than I think, or is the world smaller?
Probably a little bit of both. Anecdotally, the fires and smoke columns are probably bigger than you realize. This is a pic from some time ago of a 10,000m tall smoke column from a fire barely 24 hours old and less than 100kms away.
I mean, I’m no stranger to wildfires and smoke where i live, it’s just… even when I look at giant clouds covering the sky, my brain says “I mean, that’s big but there’s no way it’s significant-on-a-global-scale big.” But some of those smoke clouds look the be the size of a small state. And the fires themselves. I would’ve thought they’d just be pinpricks of light if anything, not those angry big blotches. I think i just need to recalibrate what “big” means.
It doesn’t help that I live in a large state. When you can drive for 9 hours in a straight line and not cross a state border, nothing seems THAT big, you know?
As a WA state resident, believe me… We are paying for it. And we ain’t getting our money back.
The people emitting the carbon dioxide should pay for it, since climate change is responsible for much of the fire.

I remember a recent year that California was on fire. Here we were watching the AQI to see whether we needed to stay indoors, or have a bug-out bag ready. I remember getting a call from my dad in Missouri saying that the smoke from our fires was all the way over there.
I think it was the year that Trump criticized us for failing to rake our forests, as if our virgin woods were the same thing as a golf course.

The shapes of states are arbitrary. That is an actual photo from space, but the white lines are added to the image after the fact.

It’s true. You can tell because the white lines are in front of the clouds.
That’s just because the clouds are lower to the ground.
You can fly over clouds, so the lines needed to be drawn higher than the clouds so pilots can find their way.
It’s also why the smoke isn’t covering the line, since the fire is on the ground and the smoke is rising it hasn’t made it as high as the line yet.
And this is taken from a low (as in southerly) angle, making Washington look flatter or squished. That or the aspect ratio was altered.
It’s definitely from the south, and low earth orbit is really low. It’s like putting your eye right up to a baseball, almost touching it.

It is true that Canada has a high per capita level of emissions. People definitely don’t do as much as they should and the popularity of stupidly huge trucks is absolutly a problem. One thing to consider tho is that winters are though and that definitely accounts for something, as well as the fact that it’s a huge territory. I’m definitely not proud of how our new government just decided that climate change can’t be adresses right now, but a big part of these measures are a direct reaction to trump trying to starve us. Because the united states are currently trying to break our economy if you didn’t know avout that. Americans are bringing the world back 50 years ago on every environmental issues, they can definitely go fucked themselves.
