Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.
For the past few months I’d been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I’d blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.
Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I’d had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.
The breaking point was seeing some dude post a “meme” implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you’re saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell…
Don’t be surprised if you find hexbear giving you similar twitches.
Their instance was already defederated from hexbear, so they never saw posts from there.
No no no. Twitch is owned by amazon. It’s not part of the fediverse.
Hexbear users are the funniest people on the platform
Some of the stuff I’ve seen come out of there is on the level of what /pol/ would cook up. Absolutely the most troll instance of the fediverse.
Except they’re not Nazis. Hexbear’ians at least know how to be funny tankies
i’m new to my instance that isn’t defederated from anything and I see an awful lot of whining about .ml hexbear and lemmygrad but i haven’t seen the users do anything. i’m more annoyed by the whiners so far.
Same. I don’t block anything and it’s perfectly fine tbh. So called “tankies” supposedly everywhere, but all I see are left-wing people.
It feels like people are upset about running into users who are politically left-leaning… on federated social media.
That’s like being upset about encountering queer people in the arts, or chuds in the weightlifting space, or conservatives at the gun range. What the hell did you expect?
So called “tankies” supposedly everywhere, but all I see are left-wing people.
Yes. Because “tankie” is just a pejorative for anyone to the left of the western Overton window
What? Tankie is a term that came around to disparage communists who sided with the USSR in sending tanks to Hungary. It specifically means authoritarian Stalinish stuff
Nobody in the year 2026 is using the word tankie in the context of the internal disagreement between British Trotskyists and Khrushchevists about the Hungarian uprising in the 1950s. Even you immediately - one sentence later - pivot to claiming it must means “authoritarian Stalinish stuff”, which is both incredibly vague and has nothing to do with the Hungarian revolution; a term that can be used for anyone to the left of the western Overton window.
I see why people block y’all. No. No one calls anarchists tankies. Confabulate as much as you want. It means what it means, and has meant since its inception. People like you, probably. And you fucking know it.
I see why people block y’all. No.
Oh no! Someone disagrees with you! Better reach for that block button! That’ll show them.
No one calls anarchists tankies
Yes they do. All the time. Ask me how I know.
Confabulate as much as you want.
Go back to reddit
It means what it means, and has meant since its inception.
You don’t seriously believe that the word tankie, in this day and age, is only used to refer to people who support Khrushchev sending tanks into Hungry half a century ago. So you’re just undeniably being willfully dishonest now. And for what? What is the point about lying about this?
People like you, probably. And you fucking know it.
I was not born for several decades when the Hungarian revolt occurred and have no real opinion on it, so no, I don’t “fucking know it”, I know you’re fucking wrong, and are trying to cover that up with impotent aggression.
No one calls anarchists tankies
Yes they do. All the time. Ask me how I know.
You know because George Soros paid you to tell that lie probably!
Lol like everyone in here complaining and blocking, when you were presented with facts, your true colors came out.
Softer than baby shit.
lol all they did was disagree with you relax
Anarchists that support existing socialist states get called tankie all the time. “Tankie” isn’t an ideology or a species of human, it’s a pejorative for a loose grouping of those that like, say, China and Cuba.
No one calls anarchists tankies.
Happens all the time, it’s a right wing/ center-lib tactic to sow division
woah that’s a bunch of crazy rambling
“Tankie” is essentially a pejorative for those that support AES states. Tankies are everywhere on the fediverse, the reality is that so-called tankies aren’t the evil people that want to eat babies or anything like those loudly complaining about us believe.
It’s my understanding that tankie refers to people who think of themselves as left-wing but actually back authoritarian states and make excuses for their war crimes and human rights abuses.
All states are authoritarian. All states are monopolies on violence, in the interests of the ruling class of society. The major difference with socialist states is that the ruling class is the working class, while owning classes are subjugated by the authority of the state. Further, so-called tankies aren’t really concerned with excuses, but with dispelling bourgeois mythos. Information warfare is incredibly complex, and directed against anything that serves as an alternative to the dominance of western hegemony and neoimperialism, led by the dominance of finance capital and multinational corporations on a global scale.
Would you mind rewriting that so someone not as versed in theory as you can understand it?
What part was difficult? I’ll do my best.
The whole thing is full of jargon.
If Tankies were anything like you’re trying to portray them. Then they wouldn’t blindly support Russia, China, North Korea which are dictatorships. They wouldn’t ban anyone who mentions tiananmen square or the China and Russian genocides…
I mean who actually believes the working class in China (which doesn’t own anything much less the means of production) supports getting “scored” for their social standing… Lol
Tankies don’t “blindly” support the Russian Federation, PRC, and DPRK. Ask a tankie about what they support about anything you find odd or abhorrent. Tankies don’t even support Russia, just their movements against the present hegemonic system of US imperialism, which by opposing they help take the boot off the necks of the global south. The PRC and DPRK are supported, as actually existing socialist countries, but not blindly. Ask away and you’ll get nuanced answers.
You aren’t banned for mentioning the 1989 Tian’anmen Square protests, nor the June 4th, 1989 Beijing Riots and suppression of said riots. You get banned for repeating now debunked atrocity propaganda about 10,000 students on the square itself getting killed, rather than the truth, which is that the hundreds that were killed that day, including dozens of PLA officers and a few hundred rioters, happened in areas all over Beijing as the PLA advanced towards the square. As for China and Russia’s genocides, not even western consensus agrees that these even exist. The UN doesn’t believe any repressions by China or Russia amount to genocide, and Wikipedia simply reports on the allegations, not taking a firm stance.
As for China, the working classes own and control the state, which in turn controls and owns the commanding heights of the economy. Virtually all finance is state-owned, and all strategic industries such as defense, electric power, petroleum and petrochemicals, telecommunications, coal, civil aviation, and shipping are overwhelmingly state owned. “Pillar industries” such as equipment manufacturing, auto, information technology, construction, iron and steel, nonferrous metals and chemicals are largely but not as thoroughly state owned, and emerging industries are largely private.
Private industry is allowed to assist with the socialization of production, developing the foundation of public ownership and planning. It’s very difficult to individually plan millions of tiny firms, but a few monopolies become very easy to plan, and folding them into the public sector turns them into public use. Markets create these monopolies naturally, and that’s how and why they are used.
As for the idea of a social credit score, it doesn’t exist outside of a few cities, and is largely used for corrupt businesses. The idea of an Orwellian style credit score simply is fiction meant to scare you, when in reality the west has social credit systems like FICO that apply to every citizen, and dramatically impact what you can afford to do and how to live.
Talk to a tankie sometime.
Every Tankie I’ve run into on .ml has blindly supported all three, banned me for even mentioning things like the square, genocide, Russia being a dictatorship, China “social report card”… The list goes on and and they are consistently as cultist as MAGA lovers in the US.
So forgive me if having been on Lemmy for several years now. I call complete bullshit on your statement.
Oh and seeing the rest of the statement, your attempt to down play the square massacre and split hairs about where and how many were killed. You are absolutely a Tankie and as bad as any MAGA cultist. Take your bullshit propaganda back to .ml
As somebody who was able to see those before they got defederated: If they’re not denying stuff like that Russia is the aggressor, then they have improved and the common conscious is just slow to forgive.
It was “they must be trolls” levels when I still saw them. Pure ragebait levels. And you did often get the feeling that they were just trying to be as edgy as possible.
What’s wrong with people expressing their opinion?
You mean like JAQing off?
No, that’s not what they said
When I joined Lemmy, Lemmy.ml didn’t really feel different than Lemmy.world to me.
Maybe I’m taking crazy pills but it’s like they got more propagandist on purpose. As if they decided to up the anthem because .grad got defederated by all sane instances… And what’s propaganda good for if it doesn’t reach the right people?
Same with tankies having lemmy.world accounts. It’s not ironic, it makes sense.
Now Lemmy.ml became their “outreach” instance, where they ban everyone who criticizes them (even on another instance) or even for downvoting (Dessalines did that because his favorite poster ‘cowbee’ got downvoted by “bots” too much. Then they opted out on lemvotes, so no more checking yourself).
For an outsider it looks like everyone agrees with them because they upvote each other and every critic got either banned or they blocked them themselves and I’m starting to think this might be by design. I wonder how many users are banned from .ml, while still retaining general visibility through federation.
Isn’t it basically how Russia and China operate? Keep your own people isolated in a bubble where only your narrative is accepted and at the same time invade other spaces to manipulate their opinions?
.ml opted out of lemvotes because they like to brigade posts and comments.
Indeed. Funny how the only two instances I have run into that block Lemvotes are the ones that commonly have goon squads brigading threads and abusive admins.
Which is the other instance?
dbzer0
I have my problems with dbzer0’s admins and moderation but there’s something else going on there because I can see their votes.
I always get the 404 error if the post itself was from those instances (even if I check comments made in those posts’ threads). If the main post is from anywhere else, I can still see their users’ votes on the post or any comments also not from .ml or db0 users.
I don’t think I ever see .ml user votes.
I was going to ask for a source on this. But on checking in on a comment or two in this thread. This explains a lot of the consistently inconsistent behavior I’ve been seeing the few times I do check lemvotes. Like I was wondering who the hell was down voting Jo, as they are always pretty chill and even keeled. Look at any other comments on the thread no problem. I look up anyone from Lemmy.ml and it’s 404.
That’s certainly not the behavior of an instance with nothing to hide. Though I would still think administrators should be able to see the votes and identity brigading. But this does explain a few things I’ve noticed on isolated instances when I’ve used it.
I mean why would a leftist like ANYTHING about current day Russia? China? OK, there are apologisms that can fit into a leftist umbrella. But RUSSIA? It’s a fucking kleptocracy. Anyone “leftist” saying otherwise is a crock of shit. They haven’t been red in decades.
I mean why would a leftist like ANYTHING about current day Russia?
Because they unironically believe that Russia = the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics. That Putin literally is the Premier of the USSR and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Maybe even that what Putin is trying to do in the Ukraine is reconquer his own territory from CIA-driven Western insurgents.
Basically, just because Putin is a Russian, he automatically is a ☭★✊ СФММꙠИЇꙄТ СФМЯДDЭ ✊★☭, therefore he must be anti-Capitalist, therefore he has to be a good guy.
These people completely distrust any and all Western media because it’s capitalist, imperialist propaganda, but they take everything from Russia Today and Sputnik News at face value because the good guys wouldn’t ever lie, right?
They say they’re against wars. But if Putin started a full-on invasion in Germany (while the country is in a state in which it’ll be defenceless within three days), I can guarantee you that they’ll cheer for the Red Army finally coming and purging capitalism and imperialism.
Seriously, we have a political party in Germany whose very principles appear to be based on this belief, and that tried to get a new Chancellor of their own into office.
Nobody believes the USSR is still here. This is a made-up strawman point, and talking to literally any communist will tell you this.
Because they unironically believe that Russia = the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics. That Putin literally is the Premier of the USSR and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
This is a straight up, unqualified falsehood, but it will get upvoted here anyway because .world liberals are happy to accept lies if it lets them punch left.
What the actual fuck!
they are that stupid. a lot of folks are.
it’s just another form of MAGA brain rotted style thinking. it’s rife and all over the place.
they need a glorious leader to worship.
I have never seen somebody believe in Putin like that.
To believe that they believe that should be a hint to first investigate if that is true and if it is not, to reevaluate one’s own sources of information.
Cool, I have, in real life. also it was like 15 years ago.
Folks love to worship strong men leaders.
In their view, the world is black and white. They hate to be inbetween, they need to “choose a side”. They can’t say US and China suck both, or fuck Israel but also fuck Hamas, they need to be “pro” something. Because most of them grew up in it, they are mostly opposed to western countries - but they can’t leave it like that, they need to be anti imperialist. And that means siding with Russia, Iran, North Korea, China etc., the enemies of the west. It is absurd, but that’s how easy it is. Some months ago we all watched how Iran killed thousands of its citizen on the streets - now that the US attacked Iran, they sympathize with the Islamist mullahs! Because… fuck Israel or something? It’s a really narrow world view and it makes of course no sense, I mean who is imperialist if not Russia lol?
In their view, the world is black and white. They hate to be inbetween, they need to “choose a side”.
It’s literally the opposite, dumbass; you lot can’t accept the Wests enemies being described as anything less than pure, infernal evil, so when you see people having nuanced takes on them, you flip out.
You can disagree without calling people names. Please stop.
Oh the irony, you say they are wrong and it’s the opposite. Then proceed to prove them right in the rest of your response. It’s just too perfect lol
Oh the irony, you say they are wrong and it’s the opposite.
This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Hard to believe it’s not a bit
China is a socialist country, public ownership is the principal aspect of the economy and the working classes control the state. Russia is a capitalist country, nobody says it’s leftist in any way. The only support Russia gets is with respect to the fact that it opposes the current hegemonic force of western imperialism, no further than that.
“People disagree agree with me? Must be a conspiracy of evil foreigners!”
It’s great that Qanon tier conspiracy is just mainstream liberal thought now
As the person effected, it seems pretty suspicious when my entire comment history going back a few weeks at a time steadily get a stream of 5-10 downvotes within a short timeframe, despite lacking any movement, or when a comment of mine gets downvoted suspiciously by a ton of people despite a similar comment being more upvoted than not right next to it in the comment tree.
Also, I don’t think I’m Dessalines’ favorite poster, whatever that means.
Feddit.org is literally the zionist version of the tsnkis
Feddit.org is a German server that sticks to German laws.
Germany has a special historical guilt towards Jews. You know, what with having murdered half of all Jews on the planet within less than a decade and intended to cull the other half as well.
Anti-Judaism is a capital Federal crime in Germany, just like using Nazi symbolism. And it is for very good reasons.
In America, it doesn’t make much of a difference whether you burn down a synagogue with a service going on inside or a barn with a hoedown going on inside. You’ll get sentenced for arson and either manslaughter or murder either way.
In Germany, if you burn down the synagogue, you’ll get a whole shit-ton of a sentence piled on top of that if your intentions were clearly anti-Semitic/anti-Judaist.
Google “Night of Broken Glass”. Can you even imagine the U.S. National Guard raiding and burning synagogues, Jewish-owned shops, Jewish retirement homes and the like, murdering at least 1,000 Jews, all in one single night in 1938, ordered by (a precursor of) the NSA and at the behest of President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself?
Feddit.org is a German server that sticks to German laws.
German laws do not prohibit you for removing comments on social media of people support a supermasist genocidal ideology
Germany has a special historical guilt towards Jews. You know, what with having murdered half of all Jews on the planet within less than a decade and intended to cull the other half as well.
German law did not force you to reply to my comment with more Israel represent jews bullshit. Israel discriminate ethopian jews, before the creation of the terrorist state it killed many jews with their terrorists attacks. For example during the bombing of king david hotel 17 jews wad murdered. Germany murdered 6 millions jews so i though germany would learn it lesson and not support another genocide , here it is supporting it in Gaza. Nazis also killed ton of communists and poles should germany tolerate if those groups do terrible things too. Should the countries involved in the transatlantic slave trade tolerate if a black country decide to attack a country who was involves in that black holocust?
In Germany, if you burn down the synagogue, you’ll get a whole shit-ton of a sentence piled on top of that if your intentions were clearly anti-Semitic/anti-Judaist.
I don’t remember germany condemning israel attack on the synaguoge in Iran. It is pretty clear germany is defending israel the settler colonial state not jews in general
Germany also killed a tens of millions of Russians. Will feddit also make criticism of Russia against the rules?
Isn’t it basically how Russia and China operate? Keep your own people isolated in a bubble where only your narrative is accepted
It’s the authoritarian playbook.
Also how MAGA keeps ~30 million US voters hypnotized. Just like Russian ZOV
zionist complaining about ‘authoritarians’

sorry, didn’t see your comment, I have you blocked

Whining about .ml takes up more of my feed than .ml
ML is not far-left, it pretends to be in order to spread pro-Putin, pro-Russian, and pro-Republican state propaganda because they know it’s destroying America. ML and Russia are about as socialist as the Nazis claimed to be.
Marxism-Leninism is an ideology centered around establishing collectivized economy and eradicating class society. The only support MLs have of Russia is with respect to their opposition to the western imperialist hegemony, not for Russia in general. This is the meaning of “critical support.”
In the laudable goal of dismantling of western hegemony, .ml and Russia are certainly having an effect. However, it’s quite clear to me that a Marxist-Leninist alternative is not the goal.
The problem I see is that they’re working to simply replace one imperialist system with another. If in the work of dismantling American hegemony they serve to support a Soviet-style dictator’s hegemony, its just the same imperialism using Marxist-Leninism as the justification instead of “democracy” and “capitalism”. Furthermore, supporting MAGA as a vehicle to weaponize US incompetence is still supporting an authoritarian president, even if it effectively shrinks American hegemony.
This is the same Cold War of constructed ideologies we’ve been fighting since the end of WWII, it is just that America has been ahead until now. Us vs. Them; America in the Middle East, Russia in Eastern Europe, China in the Pacific, Vietnam, Korea, etc. It’s just empires snatching up vassals and exploiting influence. The only difference is that in the US, we use the veneer of elections to “legitimize” it.
I cannot claim to be impartial or innocent of this, but I still think it’s disingenuous to misrepresent the philosophy of Marxist-Leninism to in-effect support yet another imperialist and authoritarian system just like the US does with democracy, and that support is all I ever see from the users and communities of ML. Although I’m sure ML can say the same thing, which seems to be how we ended up here.
Russia is not imperialist, as it utterly lacks the finance capital required to be as such. It’s predominantly an industrial economy without any colonies nor neocolonies, similar to Iran. Marxist-Leninists do not support the capitalist economy of Russia, but the idea that it even could replace the US Empire as world hegemon is frankly a result of a lack of understanding how and why the US Empire is what it is. Finance capital is the key, and Russia has a tiny amount of it relative to the rest of the world.
As for “authoritarianism,” Marxist-Leninists support workers having control of state authority. All states are authoritarian, the distinction lies primarily in which class wields it. The form may change, and the extent it is applied also changes based on conditions, but at the end of the day the state is an instrument of the ruling class in any given society, be it capitalists or workers. As such, no Marxist-Leninists support the dictatorship of capital in Russia.
While I agree they aren’t far left. They are sincerely more socialist than the Nazis were. The problem is, they are often as authoritarian as and group think vulnerable as maga, nazis, etc. Economics is fine. But it should never supersede or dictate social policy.
And all these heavily centralized States weather corporate or otherwise always fall to the same flaws. Power calcifying and protecting itself. Not the people or Society.
Sortition based governance when?
Could someone give some examples of these leftist propaganda posts? I just browse all top day, maybe they get diluted enough for me to overlook these… i’ve seen this argument pass by so many times.
I got banned from memes in Lemmy.ml over whether genocide in China is real. All the supporting evidence provided to me was from the Chinese government.
Not saying US propaganda is trustworthy either blindly believing propaganda from any government is wild.
I was also told that no one died at Tienanmen Square in that same thread.
I checked the thread you were talking about, that’s not what happened. The supporting evidence came from a huge number of different sources, including many western sources. You also equated Chinese diaspora with the Chinese government itself, which reeks of chauvanism.
As for the bit on Tian’anmen Square, it’s correct, even Wikipedia says so:
Deaths in and around Tian’anmen Square itself
Government officials have long asserted that no one died in the square in the early morning hours of 4 June, during the “hold-out” of students’ last batch in the south part of the square. Initially, foreign media reports of a “massacre” on the square were prevalent, though subsequently, journalists have acknowledged that most of the deaths occurred outside of the square in western Beijing. Several people who were situated around the square that night, including former Beijing bureau chief of The Washington Post Jay Mathews[i] and CBS correspondent Richard Roth[j] reported that while they had heard sporadic gunfire, they could not find enough evidence to suggest that a massacre took place on the square.
Student leader Chai Ling claimed in a speech broadcast on Hong Kong television that she witnessed tanks arrive at the square and crush students who were sleeping in their tents, and added that between 200 and 400 students died at the square.[268] Ling was joined by fellow student leader Wu’er Kaixi who said he had witnessed 200 students being cut down by gunfire; however, according to Mathews, it was later proven that he had already left the square several hours before the events he claimed to have happened.[211] Taiwan-born Hou Dejian was present in the square to show solidarity with the students and said that he did not see any massacre occurring in the square. He was quoted by Xiaoping Li, a former China dissident to have stated: “Some people said 200 died in the square, and others claimed that as many as 2,000 died. There were also stories of tanks running over students who were trying to leave. I have to say I did not see any of that. I was in the square until 6:30 in the morning.”[269]
In 2009, human rights activist Robin Munro, stated that he was present during the clearance of Tiananmen Square and that, according to his account, there were ten Western reporters near the Monument to the People’s Heroes at the time. He also reported a Spanish television crew that recorded footage of the event. Munro disputed Wu’er Kaixi’s claims of mass killings inside the square, stating that he did not witness fighting there and instead observed students peacefully complying with the soldiers’ demands to leave the square in an orderly manner. He further noted that the Spanish TV crew reported not seeing killings within the square during the final clearance.[270][271]
In 2011, three secret cables from the United States embassy in Beijing from the time of the events were leaked and published by WikiLeaks, all of which stated that there was no bloodshed inside Tiananmen Square itself.[194] Instead, they said Chinese soldiers opened fire on protesters in Beijing outside the square, around Muxidi station, as they fought their way from the west towards the centre.[194] A Chilean diplomat who had been positioned next to a Red Cross station inside the square told his US counterparts that he did not observe any mass firing of weapons into the crowds in the square itself, although sporadic gunfire was heard. He said that most of the troops who entered the square were armed only with anti-riot gear.[194][216]
The square was evacuated bloodlessly, all of the deaths that day occurred in areas scattered around Beijing during riot suppression. A few hundred people died, which is a tragedy, but not 10,000 people being executed on the square like the west initially reported. Substantial evidence to the contrary since then has come out, and Wikipedia has accordingly responded and added this context.
I don’t think Wikipedia is a CPC front group.
Peak party truth is arguing akshully against a massacre occurring because it ‘really happened a few meters outside of the square’.
That’s not remotely what was said.
Why would you lie about something anyone can see just above the lie?
As opposed to the peak truth of just outright saying false things and getting mad that people point out they aren’t true?
“I didn’t murder him.”
Pushed harder
“Akshully I only pushed him down the stairs and sent him to the hospital. He died of an MRSA infection he picked up in the ICU”America exaggerated because that’s what they, and China do, but the constant BS of “nothing happened in the square” outside China and strong arming people inside China, when you know what we’re talking about and you know shit happened, is abuser shit.
“Yes you were right, but that just makes you an abuser!”
I’m just going to start calling it “The Tiananman square adjacent massacre” to diffuse this toddler-ass behavior from y’all before it starts. Though, it does make you all look ridiculous when you do this. So, maybe not.
The killings weren’t “a few meters outside the square.” Riots happened in disparate places all over Beijing, with PLA members lynched. The PLA responded with force, and in the end a few hundred rioters and a few dozen PLA members were killed. The west reported on an entirely fabricated story of the PLA running their tanks over 10,000 students on Tian’anmen Square itself, which has remained in pop culture as the understanding of the events. It isn’t about trying to play semantics, but to highlight that the west quite literally invented an entirely different history and reported on it as fact against a geopolitical enemy, one of many such examples.
Also from that Wikipedia article:
Tap for quotes
Official government announcements shortly after the event put the number who died at about 300.
The Swiss Ambassador had estimated 2,700, following a visit to Beijing’s hospitals.
Records from Beijing’s main eleven hospitals, compiled shortly after the events, recorded at least 478 dead and 920 wounded, though Timothy Brook notes that these figures are an undercount due to lack of information from other hospitals.
Jonathan Fenby puts the death toll at over 700 in his book
British Ambassador Alan Donald initially claimed, based on information from a “good friend” in the State Council of China, that a minimum of 10,000 civilians died […] Donald later revised his estimate to 2,700–3,400 deaths
While public discussions about the events have become socially taboo, private discussions about them continue to occur despite frequent interference and harassment by the authorities. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo remained in China in order to speak out about Tiananmen in the 1990s despite the fact that he received offers of asylum; he faced constant surveillance. Zhang Xianling and Ding Zilin, the mothers of victims who died in 1989, founded the Tiananmen Mothers organisation and were particularly outspoken about the humanitarian aspects of the protests. The authorities mobilize security forces, including members of the People’s Armed Police, every year on 4 June in order to prevent public displays of remembrance, with an especially heavy security presence on the anniversaries of major events such as the 20th anniversary of the protests in 2009 and the 25th anniversary of the protests in 2014. On the 30th anniversary of the protests in 2019, the well-known Chinese artist Ai Weiwei wrote that “autocratic and totalitarian regimes fear facts because they have built their power on unjust foundations” and he also wrote that memory is important: “without it there is no such thing as a civilised society or nation” because “our past is all we have.”
Journalists have frequently been denied entry to the square on the anniversaries of the massacre. Also, the authorities are known to have detained foreign journalists and increase surveillance of prominent human rights activists during this time of year. Internet searches on “4 June Tiananmen Square” made within China return censored results or result in temporarily severed server connections. Specific web pages with select keywords are censored while other websites, such as those which support the overseas Chinese democracy movement, are blocked wholesale.
The actual numbers of deaths seems to be heavily disputed. In a country where the government heavily censors even discussion of the event and redacts all mention of it online, I’m hesitant to take the “official” numbers at face value. The truth is we’ll never know the true death count, we only have unreliable information; but I wouldn’t be surprised if the event was as bad, or worse, than what we know.
The CPC does not redact all mentions of what is known in China as the “June 4th incident.” It’s true that the total death count is disputed, but you’ll find that much of the dispute comes from western or western friendly organizations. We know the west already lies about their enemies, from Palestinians to the claims of Iraqi WMD. The total death count appears to be, from the most credible sources, in the hundreds, not thousands.
All the supporting evidence provided to me was from the Chinese government.
Well now you’re just factually, unambiguously lying. Which kind of goes you show how bad your position is; that you have to knowingly lie to defend it.
I was also told that no one died at Tienanmen Square in that same thread.
A claim that even Wikipedia agrees with.
I was like wtf is this guy smoking then oh their .ml
“The massacre wasn’t at Tienanmen Square, it was just all around it so it doesn’t count!!!1!”
is a very typical .ml take.
Try commenting that maybe, just maybe, Stalin wasn’t the greatest benefactor of humanity, ever.
YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND HE HAD TO MURDER MILLIONS SO THAT 10s OF MILLIONS COULD BE MISERABLE AND LIVE IN A CORRUPT OLIGARCHY REGIME, WHERE THE QUALITY OF LIFE WAS DECADES BEHIND THE WEST.
and don’t forget how glorious and prefect and FREE life is in China and North Korea.
When you have no argument, just fall back on lazy strawmen
Want to really piss people off?
“Over the last 50 years, regulated market economies have produced more wealth, pulled more people out of poverty, and resulted in less war than any other economic system in any period of history.”
In other words, the status quo of the last 50 years that everyone blames everything on, was in fact an exceptionally GOOD period of human history.
The biggest problem is that this heavily relies on calling a socialist market economy like China a “regulated market economy,” it’s deceptive and implies capitalist countries have been pulling people out of poverty. In reality, China has pulled massively ahead with its socialist system, while capitalist countries have stagnated.
“Now that we’ve killed everyone we needed to kill and dominated all the resources we wanted, things are going pretty well for us”
saying shit like is a good way to get reported and banned. because it’s verifiable reality, and we can’t allow that to enter into our discussions. because reality is clearly fascist propaganda.

Trotsky would have been no better than Stalin.
Then watch the fireworks.
This is the funniest comment in this entire thread.
Bravo.
I think it’s a pretty common take that Trotsky’s idea of Permanent Revolution would have been suicidal for the fledgling socialist state, so yea, I think running the Soviet Union directly into a broader, protracted war and losing the entire Soviet Union would have been worse than Stalin.
What’s so hard about that? You are jumping to conclusions because my account is registered on lemmy.ml because at the time it seemed like a good place to start.
Stalin wasn’t the greatest benefactor.
Now you say it about Trump, Netanyahu and Putin.
Just to make you happy: Xi, Putin, Trump and Netanyahu should all be tried at the ICC in The Hague.
Now do Biden and Obama
Straight to The Hague!
Great. How about Zelensky?
You can have him as a bonus, after Putin has been convicted. What are you going to charge him with, though?
Then we agree. I guess others don’t, judging by the downvotes my post got 😂
“Can you give me any examples?”
“No, but I can give you a lie I just made up!”
That took you pretty long.
???
Well, you’ve been pretty laggardly in defending the Generalissimus from the filthy counterrevolutionaries. I’d say that’s the gulag for you.
???
If you criticism the Chinese government on a .ml instance, you will quickly get banned for “rule 2: xenophobia”.
Go to basically any comment section of a politics-related popular post on a .ml instance. I can almost guarantee that there will be some china/Russia/north Korea brainless take.
Keep your your eyes open for new posts on !memes@lemmy.ml
Had a look, all I can say is that they don’t quite come up when I browse
all, and if they do I just don’t bother and skip over them. They’re not funny and the message therein is not one I support.
Check out !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works, but you need to log in from another instance, as your admins don’t want you to see that community.
My post history.
I think you will still see users from lemmy.ml despite the instance block. I have blocked it about 2 years ago and its the only reason why I am still here. I hesitated at first because of the open source communities, but then I thought, fuck it
but then I thought, fuck it
I feel like this one half sentence explains all of human history.
LEEEEEEEERRRRRROOOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY mmmmmmmmmmmmJJJJJJEEENNNNNKKKKKKINNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSS
Yep, tracks :)
Actually… both halves do? 🤪
Yes, it only blocks the communities and servers showing up in your feed.
I joined the .ml server because it was the dev server. Looking at the communities I subscribe to most are on other servers. Occasionally people ascribe beliefs to me based on my home server but so far I haven’t bothered looking for a new home.
When I first joined there were a bunch of popular instances that closed down so choosing a non-dev server seemed like a bit of a gamble. Same with mastodon servers.
That’s something that is criticized often - that the devs are not independent but instead try to push their instance as the “main instance”. But yeah I guess there are a lot of people like you. Don’t forget there is no Karma system, it does no harm to change the account from time to time, I do it yearly.
Lemmy.ml is like 8th in the list on join-Lemmy.org. Doesn’t seem to be pushing?
The Lemmy software developers are the admins of lemmy.ml at the same time. Instead of being neutral, they push their questionable political agenda onto the instance. lemmy.ml is 8th now, but 3 years ago that was different. Also the most open source communities have been there, I don’t know really if that changed meanwhile.
If you started a project, wouldn’t you list your server up top? The fact they changed it should tell you all you need to know. Also it’s their instance, they can do with it what they want. That’s like saying someone painted their house a color that is questionable. Block it and move on.
Sorry I just don’t think it’s right to pass judgement on people for doing what they want with their project or instance especially when they designed it in a way that anyone can set up their own instance do do what THEY want with their own.
If you started a project, wouldn’t you list your server up top?
You can bet I would. But when the participation in the project grew in the way Lemmy did, I would step down from my instance admin rule and pass to someone else. I am not saying they should unlist the instance, all I say is that the roles should not be mixed.
Block it and move on.
That’s what I did, but that doesn’t mean I can’t talk about the topic here.
Sorry I just don’t think it’s right to pass judgement on people for doing what they want with their project or instance
I can understand what you mean. The problem is that this constellation prevent Lemmy from growing because people are weirded the fuck out by the statements that are being made on lemmy.ml and especially the moderation strategy of the developers. I can recommend taking a look at !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works and sort by Top. Some of the stuff is about others members of the tankie triad and some is bs, but it quickly gets clear who you are talking to.
Hmm I see nothing - I guess the posts don’t federate back to .ml?
The Lemmy software developers are the admins of lemmy.ml
One of many reasons I’m on PieFed not Lemmy
the main reason you’re on piefed is because this is how you behave when zionism comes up:

Without the context, it’s difficult to discuss. But I don’t see why we should favour one religious extremist group over the other tbh
Nah, seeing folks from there is fine, but i would rather not see their posts
I agree. I only mentioned it because your motivation was the list of blocked users from ml you already had.
It used to be the case that, aside from hexbear and Lemmygrad (both defederated from on your instance), 90% of the most trolling comments came from Lemmy.ml. However, immediately after Trump won the USA election, I started seeing that behavior all over the place. Perhaps that timing is mere coincidence, but regardless, blocking all users on that instance (which PieFed allows you to do) no longer works to keep the most batshit insane takes from my feed.
Also I have consistently seen people commenting on that instance (and on Lemmygrad) about how proud they are that no does not mean no, but rather that they need to push forward harder - by making alts to mask their associations - and which they readily do.
So I was adding historical context to your statement here: I see what you mean, now, but a couple years ago things were notably different. Then again, obviously not all trolls are the same, and trolls exist everywhere - which I should know, being one myself (as people keep telling me:-).
“Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist”
Which country do you consider yourself a leftist in?
I think you can be legitimately a Leftist but also not insane. There’s a lot of posters over in that part of Lemmy who talk like they’d be overjoyed at the idea of rounding up everyone who’d ever expressed a view to the right of Trotsky, on Day Zero, and sending them to the gulags for being an Enemy of the Revolution.
Now you are definitely from the usa
They’re also somewhat lacking in enough self-awareness to realize when they’re really not presenting a good case for themselves.
(edit oh wait nm I just spotted it’s a 2-week-old account being obnoxious, easy one for the block list)
to the right of Trotsky
This shows that you have never read a discussion from there.
/s
there are those but they’re not that many. i’ve blocked like 3 users from .ml that were basically posting nothing but pro-russian ragebait (and an alt of one of them ban evading a 30 day ban) and it’s mostly fine
they’re just very very loud, but if you just block a few users you can have a nice time
THERE IS ONLY THE US
;-)
The only country there is, of course, Brazil
Fair enough, there was a chance you were from the usa and claiming to be a leftist, I was going to laugh at you.
Good work on the shaving!
I’m on .ml and just don’t see this. I moved here from .world after the cat food ban. The stupidity burned too much for me to stay there. I’m unsubscribed to most of the lemmy communities where the political crap is, so maybe that helps.
Should i ask what the “cat food ban” was?
It’s a long story but basically after some stupid drama, lemmy.world banned discussion of cat food unless there was scientific evidence presented that the cat food was healthy for the cat. The drama had been about vegan cat food discussions in the vegan discussion group. Vegan cat food turns out to be a thing and appears to have enough approvals to be sold in pet stores, but people on .world wanting to talk about it should come over here to .ml. No I wasn’t a participant in the vegan group discussion itself. I made some posts in the surrounding drama thread that you can probably find in my .world profile from shortly after I joined.
oh man, I forgot about that shit. I’m pretty sure I got banned from some communities for that.
🤷 I just blocked them back and moved on.
??? I’m still confused.
Lemmy.world’s admin (not community mods but the actual instance admin) decreed that lemmy.world was going to be like Wikipedia, where anything controversial that you posted had to be accompanied by a research citation, more or less. The specific statement under dispute was that brand XYZ vegan cat food was ok to feed to your cat. A bunch of idiots howled “cats are obligate carnivores, hur hur! They can’t survive on a vegan diet! Mods, delete that comment!!!” and the site admin sided with the idiots. So I had to escape from the stupidity. Are you still confused? Btw the vegan cat food is perfectly fine for cats as far as I can tell. No I’m not about to go look for
diffslinks so some of those details may be garbled by now.I don’t think the citation policy was ever enforced on anything else, but anything that crazy is hard to forget.
.world also defederated hexbear because it didn’t like hexbear’s politics, but I’m a regular on hexbear’s covid community (which is pretty good and not that political) so I had to go elsewhere for it. I can still reach it from .ml but this convinced me that the federation model is a failure. There’s no giant Spez overlord who can censor you, but there are 100 petty instance admins who can censor you instead. I’m still on Lemmy to stay away from Spez though.
where anything controversial that you posted had to be accompanied by a research citation, more or less
WHAT that is BONKERS
Well you can find the actual wording, but I think it didn’t have much effect except that one discussion. The edict was issued and otherwise forgotten about.
Still crazy it was even a thing lol. What a concept. And then to weaponize it. Against vegans. All of it is increasingly absurd and ridiculous. Thank you for sharing it with me.
I mean just to be clear veterinarians and animal welfare groups disagree with you and to be honest it is wrong to force an animal to follow your belief system when it isn’t a natural system for them.
They still shouldn’t have banned people talking about it though. Part of what makes group discussions so good is that you can call shit out and point out stupidity. And the ones with citations win and the ones with feelings well, get laughed at I guess. But to require it is probably not the right move.
Well, raising livestock for meat to feed to your cat doesn’t sound so natural for the meat animal either ;). But, I was less bothered by the vegan-ethics stuff in that thread than the just plain stupidity. And no it’s generally not worthwhile calling out stupidity in that type of thread, when the stupidity is coming from a hive mind. All you can do to keep your sanity is nope out.
Humans have raised livestock for around 11000 years and most estimates place cat domestication at around 2000 with even the oldest most generous estimates placing it at 9500 so yes it is a natural part of humanity and domestication.
Animals eat other animals. Has been that way since the beginning of life.
Feeding your carnivorous animal tofu and vegetable blends with no meat ever even when medical animal doctors tell you that’s stupid and killing the animal isnt natural at all. And that’s probably only existed for about as long as the disease of social media has.
You should never force an animal to eat a diet its evolution has ruled out. The people that do this think they know best and none of them are veterinarians they are just crazy people who want to force their beliefs on all living things whether it kills them or not. Because killing the animals is super bad unless its by starvation of the nutrients their body needs and then its ok, I guess?
Also you said “and the admins sided with the idiots” when bringing this up implying that people who think cats should eat what they have always eaten are idiots and not the ones who will force their diet on any living thing, killing them be damned! Those people that would force their beliefs on living things even when it kills them are abusive idiots in my opinion and I hope their cats run away from them and go eat birds and shit to get their strength back.
There’s hiveminds and then there’s “hey evolution and modern science combined both can tell you this is a bad idea and going to kill this animal”. Pointing that out doesn’t make them a hivemind.
I already kind of assumed cat kibble was made with plants or something lol. Meat is expensive.
As long as they’re healthy and nutrition is met, who cares? I’m sure that they actually tested this food before putting it on the market. Feels like most of the “discussion” was just people raging against veganism and vegetarianism again.
!Memes@lemmy.ml is mostly Russia/China propaganda.
Yeah because Lemmy is so important that Russia and China need to astroturf it, lol. Maybe people have different views and understanding of the world than yours? Not everything is fucking propaganda.
I don’t think Russia and China target Lemmy. I think a lot of people on Lemmy have been kicked off other platforms for blindly buying into foreign propaganda just because they hate the US.
It’s propaganda when you post memes about how the Tiananmen Square massacre didn’t happen.
No one should be believing 100% of anything that any government says. Not the US. Not China. Not Russia. Not South Korea or North Korea.
A sane take? In this thread?
Go back to reddit
Go back to lemmy.ml
Also, which part isn’t sane?
You’re saying their are governments you should trust 100% about everything?
Or that you disagree with him when he says he doesn’t think the countries China and Russia are targeting Lemmy?
Because if you believe either that’s actually insane.
More likely you got butthurt because he said all you crazy fucks got banned from other public spaces so naturally congregated to one that only bans people that disagree with you.
I’m on .ml, learn how federation works
Propaganda is the deliberate spreading of biased or misleading information, ideas, or rumors to influence public opinion and shape how people think and act. Instead of presenting all sides of an issue, it uses emotional appeal and selective facts to promote a specific cause, group, or leader. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
don’t need to be an astroturfer to do this. lots of people who genuinely push their beliefs use propaganda to push it.
Good thing you’re immune, though.
Ok I just looked there and got some chuckles. I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. Anyway like they say on AO3: don’t like, don’t read.
I’m blocked for making a comment on a post.
Thanks for recommending lemmy.ml 🚩
I just scrolled a few pages on that instance and it seems like youre being dramatic.
People should block users and instances that they dont want to see. They are in charge of their account. Then you wont have to feudpost about these people you blocked because you wont see them.

Lol
Lmao, even
You could be on to something… Lmfao… perhaps?
Rotflmfao, even
Pro russia propaganda is generally contained in ml own communities. The tiresome thing for me is zionist tolerant instances and communities and fake palestinians supporter who both side the colonizers and the colonized or defend rhe democrats support for the colonizers
No I seem them regularly spreading pro russian propaganda and demeaning jabs against ukrainans in .world communities. The instance has to many disgusting users for it to be waved away with the “few bad apples” defense
“A few bad apples” is not a defense, it’s a condemnation. A few bad apples spoil the bunch.
The instance has to many disgusting users for it to be waved away with the “few bad apples” defense
Meanwhile .world has Zionists modding it’s major coms
My argument was not to say that there is only few bad apples on the ml just that in my experience I don’t see their propaganda that much often outside of their bubble
Fair enough. I seem to notice them pushing it everywhere.
