The South loves slavery, more at 11. This is why the US should have punished the Confederacy as the treason it was instead of coddling them.

I just wish President Grant had punished the South more during Reconstruction but it wasn’t that popular at the time unfortunately and his corrupt administration certainly did not help.

Prison (hell #1) and homelessness (hell #2): the two whips of the capitalist state to lash us into wage labour slavery. “No underpaid job can be too bad to accept, or do you want to risk not be able paying your exorbitant rent, risk to become homeless? Sell your labour for the lowest price so some capitalist can make 2-3 times the profit of what you gain, which is bareley enough to pay another capitalist your rent.” This is what the capitalist state enforces by holding up these two hells. We don’t have a prison system by accident, homelessness is not a natural phenomenon. They exist by design. It’s not about the money that prisons cost in comparison to what housing a homeless person costs. The money for prisons is a fair price to pay for a capitaliat state given the MUCH larger sum of money that its capitalist class can extract of us by making us obedient and doing the even shittest job for the shittest pay to suck the most possible surplus out of our work. Become communist. Sabotage. Seize the means of production. Be a grain of sand in this machine.

In the country with some of the most gruesome history of slavery in human history, it feels pretty disingenuous to call waged labour slavery. This feels like the stock standard yankee settler aspirational landholder bunkum to me

It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed person, who goes about hungry, and cannot find employment.

Real liberty can exist only where exploitation has been abolished, where there is no oppression of some by others, where there is no unemployment and poverty, where a man is not haunted by the fear of being tomorrow deprived of work, of home and of bread. Only in such a society is real, and not paper, personal and every other liberty possible.

The only difference as compared with the old, outspoken slavery is this, that the worker of today seems to be free because he is not sold once for all, but piecemeal by the day, the week, the year, and because no one owner sells him to another, but he is forced to sell himself in this way instead, being the slave of no particular person, but of the whole property-holding class. For him the matter is unchanged at bottom, and if this semblance of liberty necessarily gives him some real freedom on the one hand, it entails on the other the disadvantage that no one guarantees him a subsistence, he is in danger of being repudiated at any moment by his master, the bourgeoisie, and left to die of starvation, if the bourgeoisie ceases to have an interest in his employment

        https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1845/condition-working-class/ch05.htm

The slave is sold once and for all; the proletarian must sell himself daily and hourly.

The individual slave, property of one master, is assured an existence, however miserable it may be, because of the master’s interest. The individual proletarian, property as it were of the entire bourgeois class which buys his labor only when someone has need of it, has no secure existence. This existence is assured only to the class as a whole.

How do they even tell if you’re homeless? It seems like a pretty fallible conviction to ruin someone’s life… Like what if your bus got delayed?

Just sell some stock and buy a house, duh. Oh, hey, I’ve just been offered a Cabinet position. Why would a Head-Up Display need a secretary though?

These numbers are going to need context.

$66,000 for how long? A year? Median across all sentences regardless of length?

If $16,000 houses AND feeds a homeless person permanently, how long exactly are we letting them live before euthanasia? There’s no “permanent” when it comes to feeding or even housing, both include ongoing costs. 16 grand is a couple of years’ food costs for me. More than 1, fewer than 10.

Note that I’m not arguing against housing the homeless obviously. Besides the obvious “what the fuck” factor of making homelessness a crime, incarceration by definition can’t be cheaper because it involves housing, feeding AND guarding them. I just would prefer there to be more context when numbers are thrown around like that.

The post-Civil War south is why we have the prison labor system we have. Abraham Lincoln was too busy being dead to stop defacto slavery being implemented to the benefit of the loosing side.

Getting angry gets people mobilized, and it lets “the other side” know we’re not happy with their decisions and won’t take their shit. Telling people to “calm down and stop being emotional”, especially over a resurgence of literal slavery, is asinine and unproductive.

Permanently house and feed someone? $16,000 seems quite a bit too low. That might cover food alone I would imagine, depending on the person’s age. More so if it’s like a 30 year old less so if they are 60.

Yes that is annually but post says “permanently” which I take to mean for multiple years not annually.

It’s more like it costs more money than that to allow someone to be homeless, since they’ll be more likely to use emergency services and such.

$16K is actually not too far off from what I spend yearly on feeding and housing myself in Seattle. Remember that most housing costs in this country are dramatically inflated by rent (aka landlord greed).

Remember that homeless/unemployed people are likely to qualify for Medicaid and other benefits

Yeah $16k annually sounds about right. But they say “permanently” which I read as $16k total not annually.

What good is sharing content from the platform owned by a trillionare nazi? “write it yourself” means that you can just write the same statement @fuckyouiquit made on X without having to share his tweet.
