As an 'Murican I think that would be great. That way the rest of the world can bypass weighing in on matters, as they lack the required frame of reference of living inside a giant gilded butthole.

Let’s also ban Americans from it. Back when I used to use tiktok, they banned all Americans for like 18 hours, and it was the most glorious, quiet, fun experience of my online life.

Makes you realise that nothing really worthwhile comes out of the US. All the influencers disappeared. All the loud screaming rage bait. And the most interesting, ALL BOTS, including “Canadian” bots that were spreading pro Pierre P propaganda, which I found hilarious.

What I wouldn’t pay for an American-free internet. Guess that will be a reality if the US keeps going down the censorship, surveillance state path they are.

As long as theres tags for every conceivable topic someone might not want to see. Like people whining about things in the guise of a showerthought.

It would be up to the creator of the post to tag it, or mods would need to tag every post. I don’t think either of those would work very well.

In large Lemmy communities, there’s a “no politics” rule that’s so broad it’s completely absurd. It would be much easier to simply remove all posts that discuss U.S. politics and don’t have the tag. That would make a lot more sense.

Good luck as a decent percentage of users are from all over the world, including the US.

That would be like reddit choosing to block all content coming out of the EU; it disenfranchises too many people.

I have over 130 keyword based content filters that effectively do that. I probably filter out over two thirds of the posts here.

Yes, but is it really necessary to go to all that trouble?

I think the Fediverse would be much more appealing to new users if they could just tune out all the hate and the utter absurdity of the US—then there would be relatively few posts left, but at least those that remain wouldn’t portray the world as the US billionaires want it to be.

It would also be a step in the right direction, because it’s completely obvious what the US oligarchs’ tactic is: distracting from the real problems through misinformation and hate.

So why shouldn’t people who don’t want any of that have a very simple way to avoid it?

Yeah, would be nice but in my case I’ll rather just do it myself that wait around for someone to do it for me.

Yes, but a Tag wouldn’t restrict freedom in any way. It would just make things easier.

By the way: You should make a post out of your blocklist and include the keywords in the description - I think that would be very helpful to a lot of people, since it’s pretty obvious that something like what I’m suggesting here will never be implemented.

I’ve got that basically but also included every American state and major city. Filtering helps, but there’s still so many posts where the top comment is US politics even when the post is completely unrelated.

I’ve much fewer tbh, I just filter Trump, Elon, MAGA, and that removes like most of them. yours seems more thorough, though.

LGBT is a bit odd to filter, it usually has wholesome stuff, but that might be because I’m on Blåhaj.

It’s not about the ratio, when a post is specific to a location outside of the US, the OP includes the location 90% of the time. When yanks post stuff that is specific to the US, over half of the time they never mention that it is specific to the US. This platform would be so much more pleasant to use if yanks didn’t assume that they were the default and were just as considerate of other users as everyone else is.

Be nice to the Americans, they don’t get the best education over there and don’t have the brain power to understand there’s other countries.

I guess the limeys have a real shit education system for not understanding that more limey posts means more limey posts to read. it’s a shame really but unsurprising that the limeys would complain about there not being enough bureaucracy and how everyone should do it the limey way.

Look I’ve never heard the term limey before but from a quick google search it seems to be an archaic derogatory North American term for the British. I’m not British so this just reinforces the yank stereotypes about being clueless about the word outside of North America that you seem to have been offended by.
