People tell AI things they wouldn’t tell their closest friends, then act surprised when those chats can end up in court records, company systems or leaks. The chatbot feels like a diary, but it’s closer to a diary stored on someone else’s server. Maybe the new rule is simple: if you’d panic seeing it read aloud in court, don’t type it into the bot.

Or at least host your own bot on your own hardware air gapped from everything.

Some secrets should never be found out.

I stripped danced for someone who I wasn’t sure of their identity online to Ariana Grande’s Into You even tho I am a fat guy. I think its hilarious. I told all my friends about my “risky” performance art. I think the rule should be based on what you are willing to defend if literally everyone can and does see it. I’m unusual in that as long as it isn’t illegal or morally repulsive in my moral philosophy then I will defend it to my grave. However, that doesn’t mean it’s always convenient. If Trump’s thought taught me one thing though is you should take responsibility for truly bad things you’ve done, which Trump doesn’t do, but he taught me that shamelessness works. So, if there are Nazis in the government, throwing people in fucking cages, concentration camps, then shit. If me dancing to an Ariana Grande song, stripping my clothes off, acting ridiculous, as a fat guy jiggling around, offends somebody, they can politely fuck off.

Anyway now I have a GF that adores me and likes my weird. 🤣

Share weird things with friends, and if they don’t like it, maybe they weren’t a friend that was fit for you. If you chat with hosted AI system just know you might end up with more “friends” looking at it than all the actual friends you know. Haha best to keep in mind.

Also shout out to John Waters and Pink Flamingos and Divine. Filth is my life. Filth are my politics.

My easy 5 step method requires no Google whatsoever and I’m going to teach it to you absolutely free!

Step 1: Type p*rnhub.com in search bar.
Step 2: Search for hardcore femdom porn
      Step 3: Fap
Step 4: Feel disgust at what you’ve done
      Step 5: Disassociate

Now you’re well on your way to finding freaky porn no Google required.

If there’s the demand, and I bet that there will be, someone is going to be making plug-and-play local AI compute boxes once prices come down that eliminate a lot of the learning curve. Like, preconfigured software and all that.

Joe User is not going to be talking about memory bandwidth or compiling software or setting sampler parameters. But—as the cloud guys demonstrate—he can use it if it’s set up. And there will be more-approachable front ends and such.

Maybe, I’m not really sure that’s competitive while the principal value prop of LLM tools is mass surveillance / advertising. I suppose commodity on-prem LLMs could become a thing after the current bubble pops and we scrape an economy together from the rubble. Maybe there’s a slice of people who understand the costs of trusting cloud LLMs (which would, I hope, be higher post-pop), but also lack the expertise to set up and run their own on-prem LLM, that would be interested in something like that.

I think demand for privacy-respecting (and creator-respecting) tools can be driven up by increasing global technical literacy. That would also, hopefully, increase the number of people able to create and maintain their own free tools, and decrease the ability of data slurpers to bilk ignorant people.

I wonder if they will adapt. People who are ignorant of how computers, software, and the internet work run into massive problems now, often without even realizing it. Making computers seem esoteric and difficult to understand serves the interest of those who would use those tools to scam, deceive, or otherwise manipulate people. I know it was a dizzying amount of information back when I got my degree, and it’s only gotten more complex since then. I’m sure there are a ton of people who wish they knew more but don’t know how.

A ton of adults in the US struggle with basic arithmetic, not because they’re stupid, but because they were never taught properly. They don’t try to learn, because there aren’t a ton of resources for adults at that level and it’s very embarrassing for an adult to ask for help with 8th grade (US grade for 12-13 years olds) math.

I’m going to have to do some research on this. The better adults (and children) who had shitty schools growing up can fill the gaps in their education, the harder it will be for billionaires to trick them with fancy gadgets like LLMs. Seems like a problem worth trying to address. The only thing I know off the top of my head is Khan Academy, and it’s been years since I used that, I don’t know if it’s any good nowadays. Regardless, the current state of affairs is obviously… suboptimal.

          • It used to be called the blinking twelve problem, because many adults were unable or unwilling to learn how to set the clock on a VCR, resulting in it being stuck at the start up state of flashing 12:00.

Even if running local AI would be as simple as downloading an app, a bunch would still have issues.

Yeah, it’s a colossal problem. One of the cool things about the internet is it allows for the decoupling of education from government or corporate power, at least as far as the internet itself can be decoupled from government or corporate power (an ongoing and also colossal problem), but it requires that people who need education 1) have physical access to education, 2) can locate the educational resources that they need, in the order they need them, and 3) are able and willing to seek out and take advantage of the resources available to them.

I’m not even sure how to start, it’s such a massive undertaking. But I think the more we can make education freely available and accessible on the internet, the better off the earth will be.

      Use a local model

I also think that local models are generally preferable, but everyone having a local model requires more hardware, since much of the time the local hardware to run the local model is probably going to be idle, whereas hardware in the cloud can be servicing User B when it’s not servicing User A.

In 2026 and 2027, absent some very unexpected development, memory prices are going to be elevated.

And while some people could get local hardware, we couldn’t build a comparable-to-what-someone-could-get-in-the-cloud AI compute box for everyone if everyone wanted to go local, not for years, as we don’t have the memory production capacity today. If everyone tried to get a local box for AI compute at the same time, it’d just do what happened when the cloud companies did it, but at greater scale, because it’d require even more memory. There’d be a new memory shortage. Prices on memory would keep rising, pricing would-be buyers out, until the number of buyers still willing to buy was equal to what supply was present.

My job told us all to use AI more, as its own metric. I had it walk through how capitalism is unjust. Not exactly a secret but probably the ghouls in management would probably be mad.

  • @eicker People are idiots. It’s become rather commonplace for “how to hide a body” to be in the search history of the killer shortly after a person goes missing (and is later found dead).

IIRC, Nina Reiser’s killer was caught doing something like that, and the links he followed told investigators what to look for (lye) in the carpet in the family vehicle.

If you _have_ to use an LLM*, at least use one that runs locally.

*: Please don’t it is making you dumber.

Well, imagine you’ve done something and have to hide it.

If it’s spontaneous and you haven’t prepared, it will seem natural to expect that your search history might not be checked if nobody will suspect you personally.

And you need some way to avoid said suspicion.

People are not idiots, people just don’t understand how transparent today’s world really is. (Most likely this would be a surprise even for you.)

And also murderers specifically might be of the “emotionally unbalanced ASPD” kind of people.

Of course in that scenario it may be private information, but given you are trying to file it, inherently you at least are in the realm of sharing it.

I would imagine things like asking for legal advice on a crime committed, which could hilariously backfire when that chat transcript shows up in court.

Yeah, this is where I would say someone definitely shouldn’t share that information because it doesn’t have to be scanned through, it doesn’t have to be broken into, stolen or anything. It just has to be the court provides a subpoena for the data and they get it. And it becomes evidence. And possibly a confession in writing 😅

FBI guy that stole all that money figured that out. After he was caught they got his chat logs and it detailed criminal conspiracy to move to Portugal with all the money he stole. The crazy part to me is he was supposedly counterintelligence which… 💩

    How this can become public:

You are dumb enough to use the share feature.

No leaks so far. But it is of course always a possibility. As it is with almost any other web service.

How this can get accessed by others without being explicitly public to everyone:

    • Law enforcement, the justice system, and intelligence agencies
    • Your conversations will be used for training LLMs of at least the company whose LLM you’re using. Data deals with others are a possibility.
