He wasn’t in that crash. Apparently he died a few months ago from kidney disease. A truck crashed into his home in 2024 though, but he wasn’t home.

Well, if they don’t eat, shower, take a walk or rest, never clean their clothes, do any chores or have free time, they can still sleep for ~7h after they park the truck and make sure the load is still secured.

I don’t know what kind of driver you were. However, my dad’s been driving for around 30 years and he makes sure to sleep and shower and he does his laundry and everything else like that because all of the truck stops happen to have all of that stuff available to them. In fact, I do IT work now, and I work at a lot of the pilots and flying J’s, and for example, one of the ones I just did in a remote town was fix a shower door so that way it made sure to lock and unlock properly with the code. That being said, I can guarantee fucking t. He’s going to be extremely pissed if they try to force him to drive 16 hours a day.
I started before that. I did some LTL and OTR driving. You could find showers and some washing machines, if they were working, to wash your clothes along the interstates, but get off the road any distance and that all went away. I always loved getting to Ohio because their wayside rest stops had free showers for truck drivers. A welcome relief from paying $5 to $8 dollars to take a shower. If you wanted a free shower, you had to buy enough fuel for that.
He might be pissed now about driving 16 hours, but I can guarantee that he did drive those hours at times back in the day.

As a non-American, I find it baffling and hilarious that many Americans are proud to work 80 hours a week. It’s not a flex. They’d regret having done so when they become too frail and forgetful at the old age. And all the money they saved and pension being collected will be spent on healthcare and medication instead.
They did not even live their life when they were young and they won’t even enjoy the remainder.

He might not like it but as soon as he is out and all the refineries are in shambles something has to replace all that. Probably hydrogen, and battery powered vehicles.

When the dust settles, my guess is people will still be cold in winter and hot in summer and will still not care about where their energy comes from.
Toyota tried hydrogen years ago and it didn’t really catch on. If the global gas economy crashes, I know a lot of locations they could use as hydrogen fuel pumps.
It didn’t catch on because it’s stupid on multiple levels, from infrastructure engineering to realpolitik. Japan as a nation is just desperate for energy independence and pretending the hydrogen will be sourced from the expensive electrolysis and not cheap natural gas refinement was a way to get free government money.
They convinced themselves that all the petrostates, which includes America and Russia, would just abandon their current economic advantage to pay them billions of dollars to rebuild their entire vehicle fuel infrastructure, since they would be the industry leaders and the only major source of engineering knowhow.
Well I’d like to add that Ford did too indirectly and it works. I personally rode both a fuel cell bus and one with a Ford Hydrogen combustion engine and both worked wonderfully. The hydrogen was sourced from electrolysis at a wind turbine. It was a proof of concept. And most relevantly… Toyota is at this again. It actually never quit because it is a smart move. Hydrogen can be easily had from natural gas or water and natural gas or oil is already the normal fuel. So you start at normal, then you switch when normal is gone. It’s expensive but let’s remember, Japan is an island with no oil deposits and a ton of smart people. Ofcourse they would try to figure it out.

A couple years ago in the US, they switched from largely paper-based driver logging and random checks to an all-electronic tracking system, which was much more difficult to fake. Basically overnight, every rest stop and free truck parking area was jam-packed, and states have had to expand them since. It’s important to note that nothing about the rest requirements actually changed, just how they were enforced. So, logically, before the electronic logging, a large number of truckers were just flagrantly ignoring the law, and it became evident after the fact.
I wonder if there’s a name for that kind of phenomena.

You think we would have learned this from school. When there’s no teacher in the room to watch the testing, some kids alway cheat. The more they get away with it, the more kids decide to cheat. This seems super basic, but somehow they still convince people “self regulation” works.

Time flies. I was in the industry, working for one of the first companies to install electronic tachographs into trucks. When I left in 2011, our customers were largely hazardous materials transporters, with a sprinkling of companies that were caught with so many HOS violations that the DOT ordered them to use devices like hours. That was indeed more than a decade ago, but it feels like yesterday.
Yeah, I guess the paper logs phaseout started in 2017, so a couple more years than a couple 🤣
