Google drive/photos downloads also fail when I’m on vpn.
I want to switch to self hosting but I’m only just getting to the point where I can think about doing projects like that and I have several priorities ahead of it. So don’t come at me for using google lmao.
People are shaped by the conditions which they are subjected to. Currently, those conditions promote endless greed and exploitation as a way and means of life, and give out huge advantages to anyone willing and able to perpetrate them at scale.

Technology@beehaw.org•My Car Is Becoming a Brick: EVs are poised to age like smartphones.
8·9 days agoYeah its whole thing is that software gets outdated but like …?
A) The latest ICE vehicles are equally tech’d out the wazoo, infotainment is 1:1 and mechanically they’ve even phased out gear shifters for ones completely controlled by electronics.
B) Software doesn’t just stop working, it’s hardware that becomes obsolete. Windows XP still runs the same as it ever did on the right hardware. There are servers around from the 90s that are still running software written in programming languages that don’t exist anymore. If you always run the same software on the same hardware (as you do in automotive; most vehicles don’t require more than 1-2 OTA updates per year, purely for bug fixes, and each one has a unique build specifically made for its hardware) there’s no reason the two should ever lose compatibility.
C) Reliability is a major factor, taken into account by OEMs, that isn’t nearly as high stakes for other tech sectors. An $800 phone dies in a few years, so what, the buyer has most likely already moved on to the next generation. A $35K car dies in a few years, you’ve probably lost a good number of buyers for life and definitely screwed them over in terms of resale value. Phone OS crashes, whatever, just restart it. Automotive software fails, well people’s lives could very easily be in jeopardy.
It’s not the modular, one-size-fits-all, update-till-the-hardware-fails, move-fast-break-things approach taken in lower-stakes computing. To liken it to a smartphone is completely ridiculous.
Looks like a truewagner bit, in which case it’s probably just nonsense
edit: yep, posted Jan 30 2024

Memes@lemmy.ml•I hope I can see reunification of the proper Korea in my lifetime
7·9 days agoSo did you just miss all the material conditions for that famine you’re so concerned about, and the recovery from those conditions creating hope for NK’s future in contrast to SK, or are you just ignoring those parts so you can feel justified in your browbeating and characterization of the DPRK as a failed authoritarian state that is actually deserving of the previously mentioned conditions that caused the famine.
I don’t see how 34K people “defecting” in only one direction proves anything beyond the fact that economic conditions were pretty tough, which isn’t in dispute. Honestly that 0.13% is a pretty low figure if we’re supposed to believe that, on top of the economic hardship, their “authoritarian state” is so brutal as to be “worse than the disease” that has more and more resulted in south koreans having so little hope for the future that they’re ceasing to bring children into the world.
It’s still legible though. I think it’s leas for the sake of modesty than just maximizing reach in the algorithm of whatever social media it was reposted to. An image-to-text algo would probably not register the marked word(s) to then mark the post as vulgar or 18+, and then show it to fewer people because of that. I see it all the time in posts mentioning Palestine, which started when it became apparent that those kinds of posts were being suppressed.
Along the same lines, sometimes something silly like a hair is edited into the image. I’ve always assumed this is to prevent it from getting caught by content-recognition algorithms, which would mark it as a repost and either remove or de-rank the content.
Seems the hate is better directed at the algorithms that make this worthwhile than the reposters frustrating those efforts to sanitize everything by putting a non-destructive mark on the content.
I wonder… do we have any kind of cablegore or tech gore community around here?

Technology@lemmy.ml•Meta just killed native WhatsApp on Windows 11, now it opens WebView, uses 1GB RAM all the time
1·22 days agoWoah, woah, last time I checked, for $500 you could get pretty decent specs. Though, the last time I checked was in 2019 when I was shopping for a 2 in 1 for school. Since then I’ve bought used and haven’t looked back.
Still, I think you’re thinking in the $150 and under range. Anything more than that for a device with 4gb of memory would be straight up robbery.

World News@lemmy.ml•‘Israel’ booby-traps children’s toys in Gaza leaving behind several casualties: health ministry
1·29 days agoAnd yet it denigrates the resistance to Israel’s crimes as terrorists, any outlet that reports on that resistance in a supportive light as untrustworthy, and neglects to hold Israel themselves to the same standard that all of that clearly demonstrates.

1·29 days ago…and they’re right to do so? The land didn’t stop being Palestine just because a bunch of Western-backed Zionists decided to occupy it and commit genocide against the natives.

1·29 days agoI could very easily say that Wikipedia has a long history of pro-western propaganda…
Idk I was 16 when that came out so actually high school level. Feel free to read the study yourself and correct me? Not sure what you’re skeptical about tbh but the belittling is really uncalled for. You asked for a source and I gave one.
The point of sources is so you can see where the person got their information and personally verify what was said, not to unequivocally prove things true or false based on there being a credible source at all.
They’re referring to this one back in 2016, where the caveat was that it had the same side effects as women’s birth control. Since the patient being prescribed isn’t the one who will experience negative health outcomes without the medications, the harm of those side effects was deemed by researchers (not the patients themselves) to be greater than the risk of impregnating someone else.
Other hornonal options have come out since then, though not on the consumer market afaik, like this hormonal gel and this pill.
More recently (like earlier this year) its been done without hormones by blocking a vitamin A metabolite that signals the production of sperm.
Uh, it’s been done. Multiple times.

You’re the one “politicising biology” by using it to dismiss this out of hand without even the most basic level of research or respect for the complexity of the topic.
Well technically you’re burning the same number of calories regardless of the time of day they were consumed, and two meals per day is a lot easier to keep at 2000 calories (as a rule of thumb - different for everybody) than three meals per day.
Personally I like to keep the digestive process dormant for as long as possible. Eating breakfast makes me hungrier throughout the day, so I end up snacking more than I otherwise would. I’ve never been a breakfast eater though so I’m pretty well wired not to break fast until lunch.
Edit: also heavy foods require rest and digestion that I do not have time for most mornings
aha, hence why I said optional. If you want/need it, have it. If you don’t want or need it, it doesn’t actually harm you in any universally applicable way to just wait until lunch.
No, actually. I think it would unironically be better to get all your calories and nutrition from bread, cheese, and sausage than to have a diet consisting of any variety of high-sugar, ultra-processed food.
Also breakfast is completely optional and its promotion as “the most important meal of the day” is a scam to sell more cereal, milk, and eggs. I will die on that hill.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Let's learn some words in the Finnish language
2·1 month agoNo I’m serious! I’ve asked german friends and they just say it’s a hissing sound, which doesn’t tell me anything about mouth placement like it does to directly relate it to a more specific sound that I do know how to make. I’ve been casually learning for a few years though, so I probably wasn’t too far off in the first place.
I’m talking only about the ‘ch’ consonant in words like ich, milch, brauchen, that isn’t present in English. I realize there’s others that are exceptional, regional, case-by-case, and so on.
Videos don’t help me much but I appreciate the suggestion! My attention and comprehension is better when I can read at my own pace, formats with audio only add benefit when it comes with live feedback on what I’m doing. Unless I’m just getting the flow of the language of course, but that would just be a normal video on any topic.

Reminds me of an article I scrolled past about Amazon generously “slashing away the margins” to sell their latest spyware “at cost” this cyber Monday.
