Sorry for multiple posts, but my points are different.

Impose tariffs on Denmark? Do you all know what we import from Denmark? Medication and medical devices. So that would further increase the cost of healthcare in the US. He already signed an executive order to undo the $35 insulin cap for Medicaid recipients. He is actively raising healthcare prices.

Tariffs would only hurt both countries.

To date, it hasn’t been the president’s fault. The shit they do makes it’s way to workers and consumers well after they leave office, for the most part. This would be different, and in some cases very uneven - if there’s an accross-the-board 25% tariff with Canada, the Detroit auto industry basically shuts down and lays everyone off today.

Tariffs seem to be Trump’s go-to move nowadays. “Grab them by the wallet”.

      • To Europe: buy more US oil or tariffs!
      • To Denmark: gimme Greenland or tariffs!
      • To Melania (probably): pretend you can still bear being in the same room with me or tariffs!

Not “Grab them” but “Grab the US consumer”. Tariffs raise prices inside the USA. The target country only loses by being less competitive in the US market.

Trump wants to raise import taxes on goods from everyone, so only US goods are competitive. Trouble is the US has exported a bunch of manufacturing so it must import.

There is no way to impose tariffs on Danish goods. We’re part of the EU, and the inner market, so we’ll just send the goods from some other EU country. So any tariff on Denmark would have to be a tariff on EU.

I’m more thinking in terms of: if you turn your back on your friends, they will turn their backs to you. Specifically: NATO article 5 has been invoked only once in NATO’s history, after the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001. And we were there for you, no questions asked. Now your country is threatening a NATO ally. Tread carefully.

    Summary:

In a recent 45-minute phone call, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his demand for the United States to gain control over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly responded that Greenland is not for sale. According to European officials, the conversation was aggressive, with Trump threatening punitive tariffs against Denmark if it refused to relinquish control of Greenland. Frederiksen proposed enhanced cooperation on military bases and mineral exploitation in Greenland, but Trump dismissed these offers, insisting on full U.S. control. This development has heightened concerns in Europe about strained transatlantic relations, especially following Trump’s recent threats of heavy tariffs on the EU and demands for increased defense spending from NATO allies.

Everyone knows Trump is a dick, and the US is mega powerful. The debate in the rest of the world is how to deal with it. Using “honey” and using “vinegar” are both in the running. Honey remains more popular because chummyness is an old reflex with the US, and most well-to-do Westerners still don’t get what’s happening.

Why is Denmark even offering anything at all

As others have pointed out, the US play here is likely to be stopping payments for the current US military based in Greenland but not leaving, testing its limits (operating outside of the designated areas), and generally just begging for a response. At this point the Danish (and the EU generally) will have to choose - if they do nothing then it’ll encourage more of this BS in Greenland and elsewhere. If they respond with any force it’ll be what Trump wants. He’ll use it as pretense for…whatever he wants to do.

This behaviour will make it far less likely that all of the US international partners will renew military base leases or sign new ones, and long term it will diminish American military power globally, but nobody in MAGA let alone Trump are really thinking beyond the immediate anyways.

So the answer your question, the Danes are trying to avoid all of that BS.

No way that is ever happening. We are a dying empire, rotting from the inside out. Because of a massive amount of inertia, the decline is really only starting to become obvious widely, but we are well into the phase where the ruling class has given up and is just looting the carcass before it hits the ground. They have succeeded in distracting the general public from the dire circumstances for a long time, but things are so far gone at this point, that won’t really be necessary much longer. As we proceed to give up on democracy, the efficacy of political influence withers away. The real danger for the world is that we have a massive military infrastructure ready to lash out in increasingly desperate spasms as the organism desperately tries to prolong agency. It is past time for the world community to organize against the threat the US poses to them. This is just getting started.

Just like the American oligarchy will have no qualms about further dismantling public infrastructure and driving wages and living conditions of their own populace down into bare survival mode if it means they can become trillionaires.
