A clarinet player was arrested after playing her instrument to the tune of the “Ghostbusters” theme song outside of a Portland ICE facility, which has recently become a site of daily clashes between federal agents and demonstrators.

This is lawlessness. No procedure, no rules, no guidelines, no restraint, no empathy, no accountability. Their violence will only escalate. America, you need to start standing up to this administration. No more sitting on the sidelines of politics. The footsteps are heading your way now.

I’d like to point out that putting that into practice is probably much less effort and drama than people might imagine. Most likely somebody already started organizing in one way or another, so you just need to join. And most strategies probably won’t involve taking up arms or throwing yourselves against the walls of the palace in large numbers.

But if they act, it might justify the fascists doing what they’re already doing. Best move is to do nothing while the fascists are in charge.

“but the drive is tooooooo long” the drive where? it’s the common excuse that it takes too long to travel…where ever. such a piss poor excuse.

I’d have more respect for Americans if they were just honest and straight up said “I don’t care” instead of “we’re waiting for a leader” or “we waiting to get organized” or “the drive to insert city name is too long” or “I have a job”. Just say you don’t care and then the rest of the world can finish applying the Nazi sticker to your country.

To drive to the nearest ICE facility it’s a 6 hour drive.

I can show up 6 hours after I get notice of shit going down. Or I could spontaneously show up, make a scene, get arrested, get a news article written about me. Who knows how long I’m in custody. I lose my job, my health insurance, my rental. Great, more time to protest?

But I also have a kid to take care of.

We got protests her this weekend. Obviously id rather participate in civil disobedience but that’s kind of hard to justify when I’m keeping my kid alive 6 hours away from the nearest place it would be effective.

America doesn’t work like Europe quite literally by design. Unions were violently oppressed, but a few prevailed. Which was awesome, then they tied all living requirements to being employed. WW1 hit. The Great Depression hit. WW2 hit. We transitioned into a military industrial complex. In 1972 Nixon axed the gold standard. The loud sucking noise was turned on. For the next 53 years we had less and less and less.

The homeless, the immigrants, the protestors that stand out. The weak, the disabled. Easy targets are being arrested. We can’t be there to prevent the easy targets quicker than they can.

When ICE shows up here, we have a much larger number of people than they will to respond immediately.

Know what happens when ICE goes after targets that they are wrong about being easy? They’re surrounded. Ridiculed. Heckled. Frightened by numbers into fleeing.

If you have better ideas, shut up, remember OPSEC and implement it locally first.

Arrested for, and while doing, nothing illegal.

Just remember, if one person has no rights, we all have no rights.

First they came for the woodwinds, and I said nothing because I play in strings.

Edit: It’s a silly joke, but I do think instruments in an orchestra is a good metaphor for the importance of diversity to society.

My understanding is that humor is a very common coping mechanism — in the face of an abuse of power this absurd, I imagine it’s sometimes all someone has the strength for.

Nah, I don’t think that’s quite right, it’s not like anybody’s ignoring how thoroughly evil these fuckers are, we can just also appreciate that they’re little bitch idiots to a comical degree who get intimidated by fuckin band kids

Like, to put it another way, US troops in world war 2 constantly made fun of Nazis while also shooting at them and such. They’re not mutually exclusive trains of thought, if anything they reinforce each other.

I’m not against dark humor. I just find this specific news to be extremely disconcerting and pressing.

Seems like there are people who don’t grasp how bad this is.

Clarinets have reeds and they can be sharp enough to cut someone up in a heated frenzy. Be careful out there ICE! /s
