You can count the number made and used reasonably accurately, it’s not a secret for large missiles. They’re inherently easier to see.

these ‘sources’ might be long serving people from the military frustrated with the new leadership.

there is still a few people from before the trump administration in the higher up military aparatus not yet fired and replaced by some cousin or something who still have contacts to established journalist like this.

I understand they might be frustrated, but why would you say that we dont have long range precision missiles to hit you with if you attacked the US right now?

Because any enemy would have a semi accurate estimate of how many missiles we would have. When you’ve blown past the amount of missiles you could possibly store in all your warehouses on a given base physics is ratting you out.

If your enemy knows, but your own public does not… I mean at some point you have to say something.

That doesn’t mean they’re defenseless. This is far from the only long range missiles they have.

        Backward propaganda?

“The US is so weak right now! We just totally botched this conflict! We haven’t accomplished anything and now we’re out of munitions… oh man what a mess!”

What would be the point of saying that deliberately?

Admittedly, I don’t know what the reason is, but a more plausible explanation to me would be if it’s simply not the kind of thing they can hide.

Propaganda may serve other purposes than politically ones.

The military industrial complex for example will be quite happy when people believe that the US really needs to increase their military spending.
