Attorneys for Georgia Fort, a journalist and one of the defendants in the Minnesota case, wrote in a court filing that they were “stunned” when they realized that the government had obtained logs detailing six months’ of Fort’s calls and text messages from T-Mobile after the government sent a customs summons to the telecom provider. The attorneys allege that Fort was never notified by either T-Mobile nor the government.

Anyone have any recommendations for a cell service provider that won’t just roll over for the government?

It’s not just an issue of them giving up the logs, they have to give them over if there is a warrant.

It’s a matter of them not recording info in the first place. A lot of cellphone providers sell data collected from customers to 3rd parties , including location data (even if you have GPS turned off on your phone, they still know based on your distance from towers).

I’ve heard good things about phreeli. Their pitch is that they don’t keep logs and offer a lot of ways to pay that minimize how much info they have about you, so even with a warrant there’s not much they can hand over. They piggy back off existing networks for good coverage. Worth looking in to if you’re legitimately interested.

There were a few posts recently about a service provider that was started by a well known privacy advocate. Apparently it just collects zip codes. I believe it’s either new or launching soon. It’s probably the best bet for privacy, but I can’t really vouch for coverage or anything.

REI did not respond to questions about whether it had complied with the request and, if so, how many people are affected.

Meaning they did or they will comply.
