So great. I love that they hoovered up (mostly illegally) all the Internet’s knowledge and then enshittified web search intentionally.

It’s like going back to the bad part of the early 2000s when skilled SEOs would game the algorithm to push their shitty websites to the top of the results, forcing everyone to navigate several pages of results to get ‘real’ useful content. Only this time it’s the search engines themselves doing it intentionally, and the slop-sites are everywhere.

Maybe worth negative hundreds of billions to us. To the companies and investors, covering losses is the taxpayers’ problem.

We’ll see how that works out when nobody creates new answers to new questions. Ten years from now LLMs have nothing but hallucinated trash for training data. How do you troubleshoot anything at that point is a mystery.

In ten years, there’ll still be gen-X’ers around. Sure, we’ll be muttering about being too old for this shit, but we’re the last generation that intrinsically understand systematic troubleshooting.

Bro we have internet taxis that are regular taxis with less fees. We have “internet” money that mostly buys illegal stuff. We have “gig economy” jobs that are part time jobs run by an app. Recent internet “innovations” are just old internet with a fee.

Can’t AI be used to benifit everyone rather than not used at all?

AI does have many uses. Guiding through difficult learning when I feel stuck and don’t have access to someone in person. Quickly narrowing down a large amount of search engine results. Building small, basic scripts of code when you either can’t be bothered to do it yourself or don’t want to learn how to code.

There’s plenty of use cases, it’s fine if you don’t find it useful personally.

No, it can’t. If something can be done, it will be done. This is not even talking about human nature but just probabilistics. There is always that fucking dude who pees and poos in the swimming pool.

People still go swimming though, also no poos in the pool lol. Also AI exists, if you find it personally useful you might as well do so. Using it personally or not isn’t going to change much.

Yeah, welcome to capitalism. Why are people seemingly incapable of taking this next step in logic?

Because many of us were taught that capitalism is good earlier than we can even remember, making it a cornerstone of our entire understanding of the world. It takes a lot to renovate that, by design.

The development of LLMs has been and continues to be the biggest theft of human intellectual and creative outputs. But it’s being normalized and treated as ok because its being done under the guise of capitalism, by white collared criminals.

Inhuman corporate entities should not be allowed to own intellectual property and exclude people from it. They should not be allowed to pretend computer programs are inhuman AI stooges to do it for them either. Intellect is, until proven otherwise, the sole province of real, individual humans and must remain protected as such.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It doesn’t pay the bills or make it feel nice though.
