I am entirely convinced the flat earth movement consists of 90% pranksters who are doing it for shits and giggles and 10% bona fide contrarian retards who falsely believe they’re in good company.
I think it’s more like 10% grifters, 90% dupes.
What’s the grift angle? People make money believing that shit?
There’s a small industry of flat earth influencers.
What the hell is there to make money off of though? In today’s Flat Earth news: It’s not confirmation bias, Earth is still flat and nobody will believe you if you try to tell them and you’ll get kicked out of orgies for revealing the truth.
Do actual real people really compulsively watch this like their favorite live streamer or HOW does this shit even exist? IS there an anti insanity monetized counter channel war to this? Oh wait, that’s what OPs image is setting up for…anti-flat Earth grift
Flat earth isn’t the scam itself, it’s the hook. There are a million ways to get people into the conspiracy theory sphere, but once they’re hooked on one thing, they’re primed to believe everything else. It took less than a year from my mom to go from watching videos “asking questions” about science to spending a bunch of money on everything from silver supplements and ivermectin to 5g blockers and resonance machines.
The point of flat earth and related conspiracies is that they prey on people’s misunderstanding of science and mathematics (why Earth round if look flat?) to sow doubt in the collective understanding of reality as a whole. Once that happens, you can tell them anything isn’t what it seems and they’ll believe you, and sell them anything to fix it, and they’ll pay you.
merch? patreon? idk dude i haven’t figured out how to monetize the internet besides selling CDs (and only family and friends buy those anyways, so it wasn’t worth the hosting fee)
Internet is just the medium for transmission. Monetize usefulness
but i could be a rent seeker and monetize uselessness. that's so much more fun. people put too much emphasis on utility and not enough on pure pleasure.
“Carpenter Shih went to Ch’i and, when he got to Crooked Shaft, he saw a serrate oak standing by the village shrine. It was broad enough to shelter several thousand oxen and measured a hundred spans around, towering above the hills. The lowest branches were eighty feet from the ground, and a dozen or so of them could have been made into boats. There were so many sightseers that the place looked like a fair, but the carpenter didn’t even glance around and went on his way without stopping.
His apprentice stood staring for a long time and then ran after Carpenter Shih and said, “Since I first took up my ax and followed you, Master, I have never seen timber as beautiful as this. But you don’t even bother to look, and go right on without stopping. Why is that?”
“Forget it—say no more!” said the carpenter. “It’s a worthless tree! Make boats out of it and they’d sink; make coffins and they’d rot in no time; make vessels and they’d break at once. Use it for doors and it would sweat sap like pine; use it for posts and the worms would eat them up. It’s not a timber tree—there’s nothing it can be used for. That’s how it got to be that old!”
After Carpenter Shih had returned home, the oak tree appeared to him in a dream and said, “What are you comparing me with? Are you comparing me with those useful trees? The cherry apple, the pear, the orange, the citron, the rest of those fructiferous trees and shrubs—as soon as their fruit is ripe, they are torn apart and subjected to abuse. Their big limbs are broken off, their little limbs are yanked around. Their utility makes life miserable for them, and so they don’t get to finish out the years Heaven gave them, but are cut off in mid-journey. They bring it on themselves—the pulling and tearing of the common mob. And it’s the same way with all other things.
“As for me, I’ve been trying a long time to be of no use, and though I almost died, I’ve finally got it. This is of great use to me. If I had been of some use, would I ever have grown this large? Moreover, you and I are both of us things. What’s the point of this—things condemning things? You, a worthless man about to die—how do you know I’m a worthless tree?”
being useless let me focus on music, and that’s where i found my people. well there and here y’all are great.
Basically, yes. Merchandise and subscriptions.
and you’ll get kicked out of orgies for revealing the truth.
I’d say you could host your own flat orgies, but I wouldn’t want to attend. I like the round bits on the ladies too much to enjoy that scene.
I work with a guy who is convinced the earth is flat and space is fake and all the governments know it and that’s why planes aren’t allowed to ever fly over Antarctica or something.
But even that guy jumped off the trump train.
But even that guy jumped off the trump train.
top kek
I lol’d. We all have a coworker like that. Hell, he’s my supervisor.
Maybe started by pranksters then grifters realizes that can sell fake books and fake stuff like some fake tool that pretends to prove some false assumption
so you start with that fuzzy equality where you end up at 1=0 due to bad math. then you just start multiplying if by shit and it looks legitimate!
i think you have the percentages wrong but the groups right. more like 1:3 pranksters:dipshits
also, would you mind using a different word than retard? i don’t particularly like being grouped with flat earthers.
Wait until you meet some
Maybe? The Netflix doc mad a pretty convincing argument that they are sad, undereducated, and unaccomplished losers who are desperate to feel superior to something and to have something approximating real friends.
I think it started as stupid shit and people with the most desperate need latched on because they had nothing else in there entire lives.
I’m a flat spacer, I think spacetime is flat, continuous, and homogeneous therefore ensuring any finite arrangement of energy is occurring infinite times in any direction you can point. Is there an atom for atom replica of the earth, it’s entire history, and me? Yup, infinitely many in any direction one can point, along with all other finite arrangements of energy.
i think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of our current knowledge of space and the matter within it bud
Current astrophysical data shows that the large-scale spatial geometry of our universe is flat, meaning parallel lines remain parallel and triangles add up to 180°. However, flatness does not strictly prove the universe is infinite; a flat, simply connected universe is mathematically infinite, but a flat, multiply connected universe (like a cylinder or a hyper-torus) could be finite.Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background have measured this geometry with incredible precision, though slight margins for error still allow for the possibility that the universe curves on scales far larger than what we can observe.Whether the universe is finite or infinite remains an unresolved question in physics, though scientists generally use an infinite, flat model for standard cosmological calculations because it is mathematically simpler.
this doesn’t have anything to do with your previous claim that there is an an atom to atom copy of earth elsewhere in the universe though. could the universe be infinite? maybe. We can only see part of it and we can’t measure the total energy of the big bang to determine an answer at this time.
Nothing? I’m not sure that’s true. If the universe is infinite and homogeneous then that would infer all finite permutations of energy occur, not once but infinitely many times. As for actually proving the universe is infinite? It’s not possible. We can only infer with measurements and physics which make accurate predictions we can measure. I mean not unless there’s like some cool way to traverse truly unheard of distances. Like if you could move 10^100 light years in a direction and it’s still the same even that wouldn’t prove it’s infinite but would really lend itself to the idea that it is.
If the universe is infinite and homogeneous then that would infer all finite permutations of energy occur, not once but infinitely many times.
That’s a big if.
Something can be infinite without having any 1:1 repetition of all or any finite parts. Depends on how homogenous it really is and at what scale. If there are infinite permutations within a finite area, then it won’t necessarily repeat ever. There’s currently no proof of whether the universe is discreet or continuous.
True, it’s a lot of assumptions either way one chooses. I just like the idea that everything that can be, is.
He isn’t wrong. With the assumption of homogenous infinite universe, basically everything is guaranteed to happen somewhere.
Edit: For your pefect copy alone you don’t even need an infinite universe. Just one big enough for that to randomly happen.
Everything is flat! The third dimension is all in your imagination. You are being manipulated by Big Dimension! Do your research!
Is this like a higher abstraction level version of looking at a mirror pointed at another mirror type situation?, or help me visualize your idea better
On further thought, it sounds like a hologram theory to me, am i right?
Nope just one really big (infinitely large) universe. Eventually it starts looping. Like a small example, if I have 5 cups and 10 balls and I put all the balls into a cup eventually I get more than one ball in a cup because there’s more balls than cups. For any finite volume there’s a finite number of ways to arrange energy so with an infinite universe with infinite stuff it just starts looping eventually just like the balls in the cups situation.
In short you’re overthinking it. With Infinite space dust, you start making the same shit totally by accident eventually.
Congratulations, you’re immortal, and with parallel copies.
i want to argue this point but i’m not a spaceologist. how is its scedasticity? i only like homoscedastics. heteroscedastics can see themselves out.
What happened 6 months ago to show this man the light?
I’m pretty sure that’s one of the guy in the Netflix documentary about flat earther. Over the course of the documentary he design with one of his friend an experiment … and the documentary end with him looking at the results and questioning his beliefs
It’s a shit documentary but there’s some insight (not because the director is brilliant, because he don’t know what he’s recording) into the conspiracionists psych
Anyway that meme is old, pre covid
If you’re talking about Behind the Curve, that was a brilliant documentary.
Agree to disagree. The only thing it does was to preach to the already convinced.
You cannot reason anyone out of a position they did not reason themselves into.
I think it was not meant to convince anybody out of being flat-earther. It makes a fool out of them, but also it shows that there are humans behind the movement and their motivation (they went down the wrong path and got indoctrinated by the wrong people, and are now isolated by everybody else). I started the documentary thinking thar they are all stupid, and ended it feeling a bit sad about them and understanding a bit why would anybody continue to be part of a group spreating such an obvious lie. They really need some friends outside that group, support and some good education… the flat earthers and many conspiracy theory groups would have already died out, if society did not treat these people as a lost cause. It also explains indirectly why even some very intelligent people do fall for other conspiracy theories (like qanon).
I think it has changed how I would talk to a conspiracy theorist in real life, and I think it’s great that it managed to do that.
I was hoping to enjoy it but those fuckers were so fucking sad. No lives or friends. No measurable accomplishments.
Spent fucking several grand on a silly Lazer experiment.
I never saw this STST guy in Behind the Curve. I saw Mark Sargent, but not this STST guy. https://www.youtube.com/@STST
I could be mistaken
He got laid.
So you know, this first surfaced years ago
I wanna know too
wait the meme works in reverse?
🤡🔫🧑🚀
First video: I saw the light, don’t be fooled by the lies they tell you.
Latest video: I saw the light, don’t be fooled by the lies they tell you
Whatever generates more profit is what they believe.
Don’t quote me on this, but I think this guy was one of the people who went to the Arctic to see a 24 hour sunny day and actually accepted the evidence
If you generate more profit by aligning with reality, I’ll say go for it
woah. i never see this. like as a former cultist, your typical response is “not my circus, not my monkeys” (even if it is your circus and your monkeys. I wish i never started that whale cult)
Flat earth is one of those things that’s so ignorant that I don’t even get mad at them. I just feel sad for them.
That used to be broadly my view, until I watched Dan Olson’s In Search of A Flat Earth, in which he explores the worldview in which this “opinion” persists and why.
Applauded for pulling his head out of his ass. Good news America - we’ve failed.
Better than keeping his head up his ass. Conspiracy groups can often also be part of community and identity. Changing your mind, therefore, might mean losing a social circle and possibly status that you thought to have. He probably though that he was smarter than 90% of the population, and now he feels like an idiot.
In that scenario, this is the best outcome and it should be applauded. If we don’t reward people for escaping and admitting their wrong, then they could easily get trapped. Why change your mind when it means that nobody likes you anymore and everyone thinks you’re an idiot?
yeah, like going “bigfoot hunting” with your buddies and camcorder. Tell me you don’t believe in Bigfoot when I’ve got the suit halfway on and you don’t get to come on the next road trip.
Anyone that can learn from their mistakes and take in new information that was against their initial beliefs is worthy of praise.
I also like that his views increased as he became more aware of the bs he fell for.
I think Mark Sargent has quietly figured it out, but he makes a living being the “flat earth guy”, and doesn’t know what else to do with his life.
What really surprised me about Behind the Curve was how smart a lot of those guys were.
The smarter someone is, the better they’re able to rationalize what they believe. Admitting one is wrong isn’t usually a matter of intelligence, it’s a matter of pride (or money).
This guy is STST, not Mark Sargent.
But this guy also has not quietly figured it out. It seems that was a very public process.
This is the problem with gossip or idle chatter. Things you think are jokes or just weird culture is actually seeding by psyops or con men.
look all i’m saying is that horses don’t look like horses on film that’s why we need to borrow and paint your dog.
In my experience the highly religious hold on to flat earth the most. Just another reason religion is cancer
The earty is round but hollow, holes at the north and south pole, leading to agartha, where the black stone sit at the center.
No, there really is a flat world in the shape of a disc, on 4 elephants on the back of the great A’Tuin
It is just in a distant and secondhand set of dimensions. You wouldn’t know them.
