“Hot take, in the next 60-70 years, someone will create some original media”
Yes, that’s one hot take indeed…
Hot take: thing that has happened organically since the dawn of entertainment will continue to happen organically
Except I feel like finding funds was a bit easier then, and it creates an artificial barrier that obstructs things that should happen organically
You think that’s new?
I think, as the gap between people with lots of money and ordinary people grows bigger, things get more extreme. It was complicated to publish something in Gutenberg’s time, it was complicated in 19th century, and it is complicated now, but that are very different kinds of complicated. I would guess, that there was an optimal time with least friction, and I think we’re past that time.
Of course, I never tried that or researched, maybe the internet gives reach that is so wide that if something gets popular it will be noticed and get funding
Harry Potter is the one that comes to mind. Also Game of Thrones if you’d like. Both really blew up, have spin offs and staying power. Harry Potter has toys, video games, and amusement parks.
Don’t know why you’re downvoted. This is exactly where my mind went too. Nobody said they had to be good, just new.
I never downvote if somebody is adding to the conversation, but I suspect people start to act shitty because JK Rowling raises their hackles.
Because those aren’t new?
1990s isn’t new enough? Then how about Frozen? That started in the 2000s.
Okay this is beside the point because you’re reading it wrong. But no Frozen does not count. In any way whatsoever. That is nowhere close to the scale and scope of what we’re talking about.
hot take: a new Star Wars or Marvel will emerge in our lifetimes. something completely original and not based on 50+ year old intellectual property…
The original post said a new “Star Wars” not and then not an IP from over 50 years ago. Not that the IP just came out this year or however you want to define “new”.
The very first Harry Potter book came out came out in 1997, which was almost 30 years ago. A Game Of Thrones came out in 1996, exactly 30 years ago. Both blew up and were massive cultural touchstones, not unlike how Star Wars is/was.
I’m not sure how you’re missing this. Get off of Star Wars. That was just an example. Nothing about that post says there’s been nothing new since Star Wars. Star Wars and Marvel were used as examples of huge culturally significant interconnected universes. Massive intellectual properties. That’s the point of the post. They’re saying there’s going to be a new one of that scale sometime in the future. In no way are they saying nothing new has been created since Star Wars. If you read it that way you read it incorrectly.
No shit Star Wars was an example of an IP that was a cultural touchstone. That’s the whole point of the post. That a massive IP would come out, but would have been original and created in the last 50 years (sorry Lord of the Rings).
And you can’t tell me that Harry Potter nor Game of Thrones haven’t reached a cultural significance. The post said nothing about interconnected universes, you should really get off that, since you seem to have inferred that from who knows where. If you say to a random person “Winter is coming” or “Voldemort” or hell, even “Potter” almost everyone is going to think of either IP. Those are examples of a cultural touchstone from the last 30 years.
You seem to be thinking they said nothing came out since Star Wars. That was absolutely 1,000% not what they’re saying. They could have said Harry potter. They could have said game of thrones. Those are two other examples that would have made their point for them. They just chose star wars. I don’t know how to say this any clearer. I don’t understand what you’re not getting.
Ok, let’s start over, since you don’t seem to be getting it. Stop getting hung up on Star Wars. No shit they chose Star Wars.
OP said an example of Massive IP, and put forth that there’ll be a new, original one that will have been created within the last 50 years. With me so far?
Someone said they didn’t know why I was being down voted. You said
Because those aren’t new?
The examples I gave fit the criteria of the statement: other examples of original IPs that were created after 1976 to become massive IPs. These IPs were just other examples of newer IPs. Still with me? The OP stated some criteria and there are already examples that fit that criteria. There will continue to be other examples that fit that criteria as time goes on, ad nausem.
So off the bat, your original comment on this thread and on other other threads seem off base. There will always be a new, original IP that blows up. That’s a nothing burger. Naturally, culture will find something new to obsess about, something that resonates with people. Should my comment have just been to read the post and say, “Yes, how thought provoking! There could be someone who is starting to come up with ideas right now that will become a massive IP later. How deep!”? If that’s your correct interpretation that I’m not “getting”, no shit. That’s nothing to discuss because it’s so obvious.
Talking about other examples is a way to create conversation on this thread. People can debate if Pokemon, or Jurassic Park, or even the Simpsons fit the criteria. What other examples of IPs have come out after 1976 fit? Maybe these IPs don’t at the moment, but they might blow up in the near future, not unlike how Snoopy has really blown up more recently.
Maybe Snoopy will be the next big thing, could you imagine? Some cultural touchstone that has come back after it’s heyday. That’s not unlike Marvel, where they were big for a while, faced bankruptcy, and then became huge in the last 10 years. That’s more interesting, and worth discussing than to just post “Oh my god, how true.” That’s something that you don’t seem to get.
To extend the “that will never work” part, for “Game of Thrones” author George R R Martin once said,
From basically the mid-’80s through the mid-’90s, I was involved in television. Whenever I turned in the script in my first draft, I would always get the reaction, “George, we love it, but it’s five times our budget, so… Can you go back and cut things?
And when I finally left television and film and went into prose in the mid-90s, I said, I don’t care about that anymore, I’m going to write something just as big as my imagination, I’m going to have all the characters I want, and gigantic castles, and dragons, and direwolves, and hundreds of years of history, and a really complex plot, and it’s fine because it’s a book. It’s essentially unfilmable.
and it’s fine because it’s a book. It’s essentially unfilmable.
And season 8 proved him right
Seasons 1-7 proved him wrong.
Season 8 proved everyone involved was done with it.
…what? S8 wasn’t even a book. The entirety of the books were filmed, thus proving him wrong.
Jurassic Park also landed somewhere in there. Lord of the Rings is hard to say where it exists because the book to movie gap
Also Game of Thrones if you’d like.
That’s exactly the one I was thinking of. It was extremely influential on TV and pop culture, in the same way that Star Wars was for film.
it helps they are pretty much legacy franchises that had an original story. MCU is not that, disney tries too hard to tie them all into a smorgasbord shows. i think the pre-disney marvel shows were much better(the ones that were cancelled by disney because of the merger).
I was about to bring up those as well. The next closest that didn’t really hit the “spin-off” level was the hunger games, but definately could.
“A popular media franchise will start sometime in the next 60 years” is a 0 Kelvin take.
This isn’t a hot take. It’s about as “predictive” as saying eventually there will be another sports star or viral website. The question is when it will happen, not if.
And whoever figures out the how stands to make a truckload of money
Since you mentioned sports. I wonder if there will ever be a new sport that rises to the level of football, etc. in our lifetimes? That seems far less likely.
Banana Ball is the next new sport. It might not beat the NFL in my lifetime, but I could see it shaking up the big 4.
Start watching ESPN8: The Ocho and see which sports are on the verge of breaking containment to the mainstream.
I wonder what the newest popular sport is
I hear about pickle ball all the time now, never did before
Read more books instead of making one franchise your personality!
Your personality is so much an amalgamation of the last 100 long form media you’ve consumed. Make good choices, an English teacher that actually cared once told me books are important for what they make you think, not what they say. I still reread some of my old series like I’m visiting friends and refreshing core memories.
We choose who we are to a degree, are you a wizard cop that upholds the status quo (including slavery and racism) or a rebel with friends everywhere? Is winter coming or are you coming to the hanging tree?
What ideas and ideals have you internalized intentionally or unintentionally? How do you think the world works or who we’re supposed to be been influenced by the movies you’ve seen, the news you read and watch?
See you later Space Cowboy, You’re gonna carry that weight.
… And then netflix will cancel it when it takes some time to become popular and instead produce more reality competitions edited to maximize drama at the cost of a coherent understanding of how the competition is going. And even for action shots, it’s like they are editing to show off how many angles they are shooting rather than selecting the best shots to show out of all the angles they have.
Harry Potter? Star Trek? Twilight? Hunger Games? Die Hard? Mission: Impossible? Toy Story?
I think this post just ignores a lot of things out there.
The book Jurassic Park was released in 1990, and the film released in 1993. Since then we’ve had a handful of films and other spin-offs, all within the last 50 years.
The book The Hunger Games was released in 2008, and the film released in 2012. Since then we’ve had a handful of films and I would bet many more to come.
What about the Pokemon media franchise? Originally released in 1996 and is one of the largest franchises with video games, TV shows, movies and everything else.
If we count tv franchises, Game of Thrones and The Handmaid’s Tale are pretty big ones based on pretty recent books
I thought Skylanders, personally
Uhhhh have you guys missed the Avatar (the last airbender) franchise?!?
The Skibidi Toilet Cinematic Universe. 87 movies. Each more popular than the last.
87 movies
C’mon, how did you miss that so badly lmao
My autistic son has done this with Doodland. It’s an imaginary country in the eastern block with their own culture.
The #1music artist the last 7 years is Dooda Lipa.
They love horror movies in Doodland too.
Man I’m here for the Doodmatic Universe
Dungeon Crawler Carl tv series kinda has that potential, but it’s being produced by Peacock so probably not.
Cmon guys, Hazbin Hotel has Ike 3 seasons out
K-Pop Demon Hunters was like that. Nobody but Netflix believed in it, and that’s why there was barely any merchandise for its first Christmas. Companies would not get on board. Now stores are covered with stuff.
That will likely grow into a huge franchise and it started last year
I love that series.
